The NHL and NHLPA split the profits 50/50.

Now, after selling rich TV rights to ESPN in the U.S. and Rogers Communications in Canada, and thanks to strong interest from corporate sponsors, NHL team owners and NHLPA executives have been advised the September 2016 event may raise as much as $130 million, according to a source who said NHL team executives have been briefed on the profit projections.
Costs are estimated to be about $65 million - including $10 million to $15 million budgeted for player insurance - meaning owners and players, who are jointly staging the event, will split a profit of about $65 million.

Edit: I just re-read your question and clearly did not answer it.

Owners are short-sighted. Next two Olympics are in Asia, that's a huge market. KHL has gotten to China first.

Come on girlysports, nobody says that the next WORLD CUP can't be in China or Kazakhstan.
But seriously, I agree. I think in the long run the NHL makes more money by participating in Olympics- simply because of the prestige of the Olympics.
Some folks in the states may tune into the Olympics. These same people are not tuning into the World Cup.

We should be able to have both. There's no reason to not have both.

In reality soccer has international competitions each year. Gold cup, Copa America, Euro cup, African cup of nations, Confederations cup, etc. I guess it depends on what content you watch. Someone already alluded to this but itīd be interesting to see how many in the States watch this yearīs WC vs olympic hockey. The olympics have that cache I mentioned.

Anyone read anything about how much muscle Monahan added this off season? Another 10lbs will make him a real chore to get the puck from.

To give you an idea, he doesn't have his pads on in Roger's photo.

Uh, I don't think so. You can see his pads under his jersey.

Theoretically, yes. Practically? Not so much.
Hockey isn't a sport like basketball where you can have a huge, nearly immediate impact in infrastructure to support a sport rolled out.
I wouldn't be surprised if the Chinese KHL team disbands within 1-2 years
