I don't know the law in Minnesota, but in Alberta the estate would go to the closest living kin if there is no will.
In Prince's case I think he just has the one sister. I believe he was married twice and divorced twice. Both of his children died.
His sister struggled with drug addiction and became a prostitute. Prince tried to help her many times by getting her into rehab. I think she is clean and sober now.
I'm also surprised there is no will, given the size of his estate, and his great desire to control his intellectual property. I would have thought too he would want to make substantial bequests to the JW Church.
During his life he was a great philanthropist (almost all of his giving was done secretly). I wonder how his charitable funds will be impacted.
It will be very interesting to see what happens with his music. He has vaults full of recordings. The Zappa estate was careful in guarding and releasing Frank's legacy.
