That's what I was referring too.

All I said was I had confirmation that they were being scratched. I know nothing more or nothing less about why - that was all my opinion and I labeled it as such.

Oh it's true! Johnny doesn't seem to let it bring his game down so all the power to him lol.

Also, serious question here. If it were Kris Russell being benched rather than Monahan/Gaudreau, would your reaction be the same? (I was going to use Wideman, but I think we both know the answer there.)
No because I don't necessarily care that they're being scratched (although I'm of the opinion that watching the game isn't that big of a deal for them, but you guys made some good points about that so okay) but I do care about it for the fans sake.

I'd be bummed if I had my tickets for tonight. I can't imagine how bummed I'd be if it was one of my only chances to go to a game.

No fan is going to care if Russell is missing but Monahan AND Gaudreau? Might as well watch the Hitmen.

Pretty embarrassing and disrespectful if true.

Don't want a core like the one in Anaheim who just decides to stop playing once they don't like their coach every 2 years.

Well, this sucks, but it appears to be the right move. Unfortunately this will be the first game I go to, since JG arrived, not wearing my #13.

With what's left over, this may just become a big pond hockey game.

Should be fun!

Sends them a message that what they did is not acceptable. Sends a message to all players and prospects that you are not bigger than the team.

After all it is the management's job to manage. These players have often this year gotten the carrot through the praises. When they deserve the stick, they get the stick
Here is my take. I'd like someone to point out a home game they have been to where they were very disappointed with Johnny, or Money hands for that matter. And yet it took 6 months of horrible play on the ice for Hartley to do anything about Raymond. The league had to deal with Wideman. Bench guys when they don't perform on the ice. I really don't care how early Raymond got to practice, he didn't help this team win.

So why the anger at the coach? Why aren't you mad at Monahan, Bouma, and Johnny? If I get a DUI and miss work, should my boss be angry with the cop who arrested me??

If fans are disappointed it is the trio that's to blame, not the coach.

But I won't hold it against them going forward - they are young

Plot twist: they're not actually scratched and they use this as fuel to each score 5 goals tonight. Flames win 20 games in a row en route to playoffs and stanley cup. Hartley is genius and wins Jack Adams again.

because the team is in control of when they scratch him or how they punish him.

So, in other words, if you are a star player, break all the rules you want, who cares about your teammates.

What's funny is that if the rumoured scratches for disciplinary reasons were named Bollig, England and Colborne and they were associated with the same rumours we heard yesterday. The same folks in here outraged with Hartley about this would have had a pitchfork thread started yesterday, ripping Hartley for not already announcing healthy scratches and would be calling into question his "always earned" mantra, and would be panicking about the impact and message not disciplining these guys would have Johnny and his development.

Why, because it's more important to people that they validate their preconceived notions than actually analyse the situations as they come up. For those who hate Hartley any situation will be twisted to fault him, fir those that think Johnny walks on water the finger will always point away from him, and for those who have spent considerable energy making priority one mocking the Oilers and there culture, priority one will be condemning any actions that publicly condem the Flames or our players for not being issue free.

Who would have thought that the day would get even more interesting after the Phaneuf trade?

What sucks is that Spector turns out looking right on this. I am looking forward to hearing Francis' take on it during the first intermission, and I'm sure he'll somehow blame Nenshi too.

I wonder if they take the pregame skate, get a last minute stay of execution and play really, really guilty and really, really well?

If they did something against team policy, they get scratched. That's how the big leagues work. Bob & co are doing the right thing by NOT giving preferential treatment to star players.

Alex Ovechkin, who is a class above Johnny & Mony, was scratched for setting his alarm clock wrong. He was sat, he owned his mistake, and he moved on. If he can be scratched for violating team policy, so can these three, and they should be.

I sincerely hope they respond positively and come back stronger. Own it, learn from it, and move on. It worked for Johnny in game 5 last season (albeit for a different reason).

The amount of entitlement some posters are showing in this thread is ridiculous. "I pay money for tickets and I want to see Gaudreau and Monahan and now the game is going to suck and rabble rabble rabble".

It's disappointing that these guys were scratched, but I'm glad it's happening if there is a reason for doing so.

It's incredible how many posts there are in this thread that essentially advocates they care more for the players than the team (and it's long term success). That is a dangerous slope that leads to dumpster fires that leads to franchises like the one up north.

Outside of personal emergencies, the team ALWAYS have to be above the player(s). Obviously these players did something that violated that. You cannot have that attitude develop, and has to be nipped in the bud as soon as the tendencies appear. Can't allow for future instances to occur. Appeasing the fans in the short term be damned.
