Gio has earned this contract. And it's a fair deal for both sides IMO -- a little lower on salary by Gio, and little more term given by the team. No doubt someone would have given him both if he hit the open market.
If Russell is willing to take 5 money I'm sure Treliving can find a spot for him; unfortunately, he's shown he can be a solid 3/4 on a deep blue line (2/3 with injuries) and will get offered that elsewhere.

Take your pick. There would have been a long line up of teams interested in Gio's services

I dunno, besides this off season where it didn't get too crazy July 1st tends to bring out the big deals with GM's not caring about what happens down the line, giving up term in order to get the deal done that day. Christian Ehrhoff got a ten year deal a couple summers ago for crying out loud, 29 year old Sekerha signed a 6 year deal.
Wouldn't be surprised if Giordano got a 6 year deal at 7.5+ July 1st if he stayed UFA, don't know why you would be to be honest.

What?
Hillier and Ramo aren't exactly non-replaceable players.

I'm sure every team in the league would like to have Giordano, but it would depend on the contract. I think you're exaggerating the number of teams that would be willing to pay him much more than Calgary just did.
Philly, Dallas and Colorado are the only ones that make a lot of sense to me. Maybe Columbus. And that's without knowing any of their cap situations.

Yeah I see your point, bite even 3-4 times trying to get Gio would result in a pretty huge price bump or longer term in my opinion.

I love that just as Edmonton are "bound to improve" with their vaunted offense lead by their new generational talent, Calgary comes back with one of the strongest D cores in the league.
Ha Ha Oilers suck!

Full no trade clause for Gio in the first four years, then a modified one in the final two years, as per @generalfanager. #Flames

The flaw in that argument is that you don't know what the cap will be in the last 2 years. $6.75M may not look so bad in 2020.

I think lots of teams would want him, maybe not half the league but lots I'm guessing. I think the teams pushing to win now (philly is perfect example) would see him as one of the final pieces while young teams would want someone like him to mentor and anchor the D. Gio is a #1, Norris calibre, amazing captain defenseman, those don't come along that often. If he hit the market, I would understand if teams that aren't close to winning now would still go after him just because a player like that doesn't come along that often.
We'll never know who would be interested in signing him but I'm sure every team would want him.

If the NHLPA uses their 5% escalator each year for the next 3 years, the Cap will be 82.65M by 18/19, and 86.78M by 19/20.
6.75M for Gio when we're realistically looking at a 85M+ salary cap should quiet down those complaining about paying a 38/39 year 6.75M.
So if the escalator is used for the next 3 years, Gio's cap-hit in relation to the salary cap is
16/17: Gio's contract is 9% of the cap
17/18: Gio's contract is 8.57% of the cap
18/19: Gio's contract is 8.17% of the cap

It does not matter if half the teams would offer him a longer term extension at more $... it only takes one team to offer him that as a free agent. And you can be sure that there is one team out there that thinks that Gio is worth this much or significantly more.... just look at how many CP posters are saying this is a terrific deal. So, if we want him we had to pay this much, and I think it is a good deal!!

Deal is fine. Gio compares to a guy like Boyle who was elite to about 35, 36, still top pairing, then top 4 for a couple seasons and is now used more as a bottom pairing guy.
