I sit in the back because that's how they do it in the movies.

I only sit in the front if there's no space in the back. I find it weird up there.

Weird in what way? It's just a guy doing a job, is it because they're mostly immigrants or because they're a stranger to you?

Not sure I get that one.

Default Hate crime charges laid against passenger in Calgary taxi abuse video

Quote:
A woman who was caught on CCTV video abusing a Calgary taxi driver has been charged with a hate crime.

Twenty-four-year-old Brittany Bachinsky is charged with uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm in the July 2014 incident. The video was released to Global News in July 2015.

Cabbie abuse Calgary RCMP reopen investigation into racist abuse of Calgary cabbie
The video obtained by Global News shows Bachinsky berating the cab driver, saying, “I don’t know why the f–k they let people like this into our f—ing country.

“You shouldn’t be allowed in my country.”

Safou Ranna is the taxi driver shown in the video and has been driving a Calgary cab for two years.

“Your country? It’s not your country,” says Ranna in the video.

“It is my f—ing country buddy, where are you from? Where are you from?” replies Bachinsky.

Police said they believe Bachinsky saw the video that aired on Global News July 21 and recognized herself, but failed to turn herself in.

Bachinsky was arrested and released on a promise to appear in court. Her first court appearance is set for Oct. 1.

Police are still looking for a passenger who was riding in the front seat. Investigators said he will also face charges.

Maybe it needs to be said:

"Taxi drivers are still people too."

Why do people seem to think that cabbies are open-season?

Why would anyone think its okay to berate a person who is providing you a service?

Same people who think it's okay to lay into 16 year-old baristas for screwing up their latte orders. People are dinks.

On the flip side, my wife has been berated by several cabbies for traveling without a man, and other blatant sexist cultural nonsense that they choose to hang on to.

Not to sound skeptical but this doesn't sound like something that would happen commonly enough for it to happen more than once to the same person.

Half the fares out there are women, I can't honestly see cabbies berating people who aren't part of their culture for not following their cultural norms. That's just seems completely bizarre and something you'd hear as a crazy one off, not a "It's happened several times from different drivers to my wife" multiple incident.

Odd. What happened in those cases, did you go anywhere with it?

So has mine.

The notion that someone can be charged with a hate crime blows my mind.

How does the notion that someone can be charged with a hate crime blow your mind?

It's almost like you guys are countering the fact that a horrible person committed a terrible racist act and got charged with anecdotal stories of "well THOSE GUYS are just as bad sometimes".

This thread seems a little bizarre and there's an air.......I won't say it.

And can you guys elaborate on these serious incidents of your wives being berated for not travelling with a man? Just as being charged with a hate crime blows you away, the idea that the described berating incidents apparently isn't a very rare, crazy thing kind of blows me away.

I think racism is disgusting. However, I think the specific category of a hate crime is a bit nefarious. We have laws to deal with assault already. Are the person's actions more wrong because they did them to a member of a identity group? It erodes faith in the law, and in the process. Is being a little racist dink to a taxi driver a crime, or is it just a great reason for that particular company to ban her from using their service.

You would be shocked then to see some of the attitudes of older men. It's not just because of them being outside of their culture, they truly believe men are superior to women and women should not be out of the house without a male escort.

Three incidents. One, my wife went into our neighbourhood convenience store alone. The cashier berated her, and insulted her at the register. Two other times, taxi drivers have asked her if she was married, why she was out alone, and one of them even called her a whore.

Don't worry. Even though women are treated like chattel in many cultures, subject to rape, abuse, and murder, my wife and I both agreed that it wasn't a hate crime. These guys were just creepy losers. The best we could do was inform the police on one of the occasions that my wife had been harassed, and in all three cases, stop using that particular business.

When people are being targeted for assaults solely on the basis of their race, then yeah, I kind of think it's necessary to distinguish between that and regular assault.

Why? It is unjust for two qualitatively similar crimes to be treated the same.

I disagree. Do you have a problem with the distinction between murder one and murder two?

In what way? The problem with real race crimes is often the criminal justice system's lack of care in actually prosecuting crimes. Blacks weren't suffering from "hate crimes," they were suffering from an almost seemingly lack of care by the criminal justice system to actually defend them from the crimes being wantonly committed against their communities.

A real crime, when it occurs, should be dealt with harshly, and fairly. The crime, detailed above, would be criminal harassment.

It's a crime, that's why we have a corresponding law. I'm glad Canada takes a serious stance on racism, legally. I'm a little disappointed you don't, but to each their own.
