I wonder how many of the potential owners are just biding their time waiting to see how the Arizona situation plays out? Better to get an established re-located team than an expansion team. It will probably cost less too.

That crossed my mind too. Though, the more I think about it, the more I think they'd have to pay the full expansion fee. It would just be too distasteful to the others that ponied up the 500 mill. The league could always say, 'you can have it for 500 mill if you want, if not we'll just contract it'. Especially if they already got some expansion.

Plus, we weren't that far off from it anyway. Winnipeg paid 170+ didn't they?

I'd like to see both Las Vegas and Quebec City get the teams. It would leave Seattle with their dithering looking for both a NBA and a NHL franchise that's in trouble, so they could be bought and moved. I like the idea of a team in Seattle but they need to get their crap together.

Watch them go a completely different direction with a name, say Nevada Big Horns, have it be the running joke around Las Vegas for a few seasons to end up changing it to Las Vegas Gamblers or something gambling related.

Personally, I hope it is gambling related so that they use slot machine sound effects on replays where action is taking place in the slot.

Daryl Katz should pitch in some money to help the Quebec expansion because if they get a team Edmonton will move from second to third worst place to play in the NHL.

Also expansion is dumb and I really wish the NHL wasn't doing this.

Tinfoil hat time: This stinks of a theatrical process for the general public, as I think the NHL knew that they would only get Quebec and Las Vegas bids at this point in time. Likely, both have been promised teams by Bettman and the BOG.

As well, the other "applications" are going to be really useful when it comes time to relocate a couple franchises as they now have a pre-built list of interested parties.

Likely more industry in Quebec City as well.

That was too bad Toronto did not bid for a team. I was hoping to see Toronto get a NHL team..............

That joke is as old as the Leafs cup drought.

I haven't followed this thread. Has there been any word on how the salary cap will be handled following a potential $1B one time increase in HRR, followed the next season by a big drop without the expansion fees?

It will have no effect. Expansion fees do not count as HRR and the players will see none of it.

Expansion fees are not HRR. Just a whole lot of bonus cash for the owners.

I would want Toronto to get a 2nd team just because of how hilarious it would be if they won a cup before the Leafs.

Obviously you have never been to Quebec City.
It is an absolutely fantastic city for food, culture and nightlife.
It has wonderful old-world charm.

I think any city with only 750K metro population will get boring after while. Especially when apparently 65% of that population only speaks French. (wiki)

With a username like Polak I would assume you know that many European cities are sub-1million population yet are great places that don't get boring. They even speak a language other than English (gasp). What's wrong with French?

I've stayed in places like that for months and yes, they get really boring after the 50th time you go eat in the old square. Either way though, we're not talking about the actual validity to that kind of statement.

We're talking about 20-something millionaires deciding where they want to live.

A city with a population of 750K, more than half of whom don't even speak your language? I don't think it will be very high on your list.

Personally, I prefer smaller cities and I have lived in my fair share of both.

What specifically is Quebec City missing that makes it a less attractive place to live than say Detroit, St. Paul. Buffalo, Toronto, Vancouver, Columbus, Pittsburgh...?
