Unbelievable how some people have no conscience. Run someone over and leave her to die and just drive off. Bloody hell, what has happened to humanity!
It never ceases to amaze me how the minds of some human beings work. Dispicable act and unforgivable act.

That's ridiculous.
How would you explain the dramatic drop in auto theft? This was happening for 20 years. It's not like kids in the 90s just stayed the same age.

A big group of them turned 18 around the time, I knew some of them through my job in the legal system. That's all I'm saying.

...and there were tons of youth in Winnipeg stealing cars, and going for joyrides 20 years ago. Demographics will prove that argument is flawed. Why are you shooting down something that has been so successful in other jurisdictions? The goal should be to take preventative measures, so this sort of thing rarely ever occurs.
I don't see the point of maintaining the status quo of "catch and release" then try to throw the book at the offenders, when they kill someone.

Here's my last car:
"A 26-year-old Stettler man and a 28-year-old Ponoka woman were driving in a stolen black 2008 Toyota Yaris, which had been reported stolen from Red Deer the previous day. Around 9 p.m., they “accessed Highway 12, entered the eastbound lane, and struck” the other vehicle, according to Cpl. Cameron Russell from the Stettler RCMP detachment.
The other vehicle, a red 2008 Ford Focus, was driven by a 41-year-old Stettler woman, who was accompanied by her 15-year-old daughter. The black car ended up in the south ditch and the red in the north ditch.
The occupants of the black car had to be extracted by Stettler Fire and Rescue, which arrived on scene shortly past 9 p.m. The four individuals were taken to Stettler hospital and released, though the occupants of the black vehicle were released directly into RCMP custody."

I never had a car stolen in Manitoba, but this is my car a months go. The 26 year old man who stole it, has a lengthy history of this kind of activity, and was released 12 hours after it happened. He was only charged with possession of stolen property. They almost killed a mother and daughter.
Not sure how bad car thefts are in Calgary, but I'm hearing from the RCMP and residents of Red Deer, that they are at record levels. Something has to be done about the rise of auto thefts in Alberta. How many more innocent people have to die?

I find it hard to believe the 16 year old won't be charged. He obviously knew what was happening during the gas and dash as evidenced by him hopping in the back seat instead of going back to the passenger seat. Certainly he is not responsible for the death of the woman, but he was an accessory.

You would be amazed at what car thieves get away with.

Maybe I just think this because it's what would happen on a TV show, but I'm assuming that they had no idea who the driver was and got the passenger to give him up in exchange for not charging him.

sorry, i am a bit late to this discussion, but has centex issued any statement on this incident?
specifically i'd like to know what their stance is on who pays when someone drives away without paying?
also, i fail to understand why there needs to be legislation to pay before you pump - cant the stations just decide to make that change.

There is zero percent chance Centex has a policy that employees are liable. Sure its possible the station's franchisee or shift supervisor tells or implies staff they are liable, but no where would it be a real formally documented policy.
On the "pay before you pump" issue, yes, it is totally up to stations to decide right now, and they all make the business decision to "eat" the losses for higher in store sales.
That is precisely why stations had to be legislated to do so in other areas where they have that law. Stations wouldn't have done it, favoring increased sales over potential risks, but the government steps in and says "lives matter more", and poof, now you're forced to deal with those reduced sales. If it made sense and stations did it always by choice, there would be no need to legislate them to do so.

Also I absolutely despise the YCJA. That POS should be named and shown.

What would you charge him with?
Can't charge him for the driver's actions and a minor theft charge probably wouldn't even get him any incarceration. His testimony would be worth more than whatever happens as the result of a conviction for stealing $100 worth of gas.

Come on guys, let's help this family. It must be really expensive to ship the body back to Iran for burial. Our tax dollars will only go to feeding and housing that POS and not to the Rashidis.
They came to Canada for a better life and we failed them. I hope what we do will at least leave them a better impression of us Canadians.

The 20 year old kid is, and was, likely on drugs... so if he is a "piece of work" it could be the drugs. Not excusing it- just saying.
And are they brothers or cousins or something? Is that why the 20 year old's name isn't published??
Edit: looks like he's been named now

The bigger crime here was owning a Yaris.
