In all seriousness, tipping anyone for doing their job is rather perplexing, not to mention the jobs that are commonly tipped as opposed to those that are not are rather arbitrary as well.

This post needs a clip of the diner scene from Reservoir Dogs...
I am used to tipping now, but coming from Australia, where a tip is an optional gratuity, not a wage supplement, the whole phenomenon in north america confused me. So you pay your employees less, charge less on face value of the meal, and then rely on a customer to cover the shortfall in wages as an extra tax on their meal?

I think it's odd that you believe having shoes on is the default state for humans.

If you stepped in dog crap, don't even bring them in the house.
Cultural taboos aside, leaving shoes off makes more sense to me. A sock is cleaner, not everyone's feet are sweaty messes. I don't even like when I left something in the house and when I go back in to grab it I'm too lazy to remove my shoes. I like a nice clean floor, I don't like shoes from outside tracking all over that floor.
It's not about cultural taboos for me, it's just general cleanliness.

How is it more neurotic than someone who would refuse? Or make a deal about it? Where's the line on too dirty? Easier to have everyone remove shoes than be checking everyone's before they come in. Door mats? If I have a party, regardless of the weather, the area by the door where the shoes are is filthy, and everyone wipes their shoes regardless of having to take them off.
I don't want that tracked all over my house.
And again, I've yet to have to ask anyone (other than my dad as mentioned above) to take them off. People just do it, it's common courtesy and I don't think really up to you. If you don't care, or find socks disgusting, let people roam your place all they want. At someone else's house I can't imagine ever not doing as they ask in regards to keeping their house clean.

In my opinion, there is no correlation between tip culture and service, rather it's the restaurant and their servers that will ultimately affect whether you have a good or terrible dining experience. To paint all restaurants in Europe as being more expensive and having poorer service is a fallacy

Yeah that's true, we didn't have terrible service everywhere. Just found there was less incentive to be helpful there. Mind you we found the service was better off the beaten path rather than tourist traps like Venice. Still hated the prices in most places, found it more expensive in general.

Probably no tips, especially when you consider an additional 15% on top of the cost of a meal thats probably already increased in price 25%-50%.

I've never refused to take my shoes off. And I always take boots off in winter. I have started telling guests when it's dry that they can keep their shoes on, and I've noticed more people (mostly who have traveled and worked in other countries) doing the same. There are several houses I go to now where I don't ask, because I know they share my indifference.

I once tipped in a resturant in Sharjah (outside of Dubai), and left the restaurant. The server ran down the street to give me my tip back. Told her to keep it, and she was adament on giving it back (no tax, or tip place). I don't mind tipping, but I hate all these dumb servers I have on facebook feel the need to rant on their wall's for everyone to see how "people should stay the #### home if they don't want to tip at least 20%" ... and the VAST majority of girl servers in Calgary say this ####, when MOST of the time they do ####ty service, and only really take my order and ask me if I want the bill now. LOL. #### off.
That server in Sharjah was AWESOME. I gave her the biggest tip I have ever given to by the way, she always filled my glass quickly, asked me if I needed anything else all the time, other little things... wish only that was the case here

I found in the general that the wait staff in Europe are more experienced, which is good and bad. Good because it tends to be more competent. Bad because you see a lot of wait staff who do not seem to like their jobs, but they work in an economy where it's more difficult than in North America to switch jobs, so they stay at a place where they're not happy.

It started out as actual social conventions not being followed, ie. no saying "bless you". Then it turned into the anonymous sharing and attempted justification of dickbag behaviors and borderline sociopathy.
Flushing the toilet is basic hygiene and common sense, not a social convention.
We also need a separate tipping thread it looks like.

I am waiting for upcoming confessions of booger-on-the-wall-wiping, grandma-pension-money-stealing-to-buy-weed and other disgusting revelations. I think they are still coming.

Outdoor shoes have all varieties of nastiness on them, and most if it you can't see.
Herbicides/Pesticides are all over the soles of your shoes. People gob everywhere, and you stroll around in it.
The homeowner may have a toddler that crawls around and licks the floor all day, I'd rather them be ingesting a little foot sweat, than the infinite variety of crap that could be on the soles of shoes.

The clean side goes on your pants, the dirty side is for your mouth / hands. Typically the napkins are thick enough that there shouldn't be any seepage.

I simply wouldn't let people who don't take off their outside shoes past my front foyer. Sorry if wearing shoes is the norm at your house, but it isn't for mine. Heck, I don't even allow myself to do it, so why would I allow other people to?
If you have a foot problem, I'd allow shoes if they were your shoes you wear specifically for inside. If not, sorry pal, guess you're standing near my front door for the night. Either that, or I'll even be kind enough to let you use my office chair as a makeshift wheelchair.
