Are you seriously suggesting that the Oilers could solve their cap problems by trading some combination of Eberle, Hall, and Nugent-Hopkins for players on LTIR?
|
Um no, saying players can be traded. Leafs have money and were very creative. Creative organizations can find ways to move players.
Players like Eberle, Hall would be an easy trade.

How many good UFA signings are there?
I keep mentioning this, but how many top 4 D are available this year? Or the next 5 years?
What I noticed lately is every team offers the same $ amount +/- 5%, its just which team gets the winning bid.

Probably Bouwmeester?
Jay was a bust here but he was one of the most sought after UFA's ever heading into that summer. A 26 year old top two blueliner? It was a dream.
I realize he never officially got to the UFA, but we traded for his rights and signed him days before that happened. I'd put him in that category.

IMO UFAs like (a) money (b) term (c) location (d) chances of winning right now (they are usually on the back end of their career).
McDavid supplies none of that. In 2005 after Crosby was drafted, the Pens got a few UFAs. But they had to pay (Gonchar got a 5X5 which was huge in those days and Palffy got 3x4.5).

If all you want to do is get rid of players, sure, it's easy to trade them. Getting value in return is the hard part.
The Oilers' most desperate need right now is for top-4 NHL defencemen. There are virtually none on the market. What they have to offer in trade are highly paid, one-dimensional offensive wingers. There's a glut of those on the market. The only way Chiarelli can fix that mess in a hurry is if he can make a trade with some other NHL GM who is as stupid as the guy that put the Oilers in that position.

Welcome back to relevancy Edmonton. Had to happen eventually, too bad they had to get a generational talent to make it happen.
