Probably because they have the freedom to do so, and have not lived under a rock for the past 8 years. The Edmonton media does not have the same liberty to do so.

Crosby had over 100 points in his rookie season and Pens still finished dead last in the league in 05-06
They turned it around when MAF became a starter and some good defenseman emerged.
Edmonton will still be bad for a while. McDavid can't stop the other team from lighting up their AHL defense.

@BillSimmons: Taken 4 - Liam Neeson tries to save Connor McDavid from being drafted by Edmonton.

tin foil hat comment you are predicable and naive. Keep drinking the Bettman kool aid the NHL love people like you.

Make a rule that a team can pick #1 overall no more than twice in a five year period.

It's ironic. The very rule that the NHL added by reducing the odds for the 1st team to win the lottery was because of the Oilers.
And the Oilers benefited from it

Must suck being a Buffalo fan. Finish last in 2014, miss out on Ekblad. Finish last in 2015, miss out on McDavid. Reinhart/Eichel is still pretty good, but Ekblad/McDavid would have been way better.

@SWhyno: MacTavish on winning McDavid lottery: "It sure turns the focus squarely on the Oilers as a team to be reckoned with in the future."

Said that it's ironic that the worst managed hockey team in the modern era is being gifted a generational talent.
Said it's a gong show that the Oilers might completely re-think their coaching situation because of the lottery results. Disrespectful to Nelson, etc.

If theres one trait that the Oilers know how to knock out of the park its 'disrespect.'

I have the upmost confidence that the Oilers can and will screw this opportunity up.

Of course, things are different now, but the hype train is coming back into station. If you guys thought hearing "the young, high-octane Oilers" all these off-seasons was annoying, we've seen nothing yet.

Well that will maybe sell seats in the new building, and provide fodder for the media, but players, and agents know all to well the snake oil that Lowe tries to sell and aren't buying it. Gifting another 18 year old a starting spot on a team that hasn't made the playoffs in a decade, isn't going to have the UFA's banging down the door.
Nelson, now, is as good as gone. With the spotlight on the Oilers now as soon as the offseason hits and into the first few months of next season as McDavid makes his rounds of the league, no way will a c-lister with no rings be the teacher for him. Lowe would step behind the bench himself to take the credit and ego stroke of said increased spotlight.
