I would take Ritchie, Ehlers and Dal Colle over Sven.

Nylander, Perlini, Kapanen, Virtanen I'm not so sure about.

In terms of talent it's more like >>>>

Watch more clips of Johnny, his abilities to maintain puck control are exponentially higher than Sven's. The flames management wanting Ritchie is probably in large part due to them wanting him to play with Johnny. The management is underselling Johnny at every point to take the pressure off him but the pure talent is unmatched by everyone on the Flames. Management probably had a big party the day Johnny signed.

How about outside of the top 10? I think the Caps could use Wideman again. 50% retained Wideman, Sven Baertschi, and another +. We can pick whatever prospect drops, whether it be Fleury, Tuch, Virtanen, Ehlers, whoever is available at 13. I would want Ritchie too, but I doubt he goes out of the top 10.

Another team that could use Baertschi is the Predators.

I think valuing Johnny over Sven to that extent, at this point, is completely justified. This makes 2 years in a row where Baertschi has been underwhelming (not terrible or bad), while Gaudreau has only continued to project upwards in every transition he has made. And, for arguments sake, I would say that physically (at least) the NCAA > CHL/WHL, and with concerns over Johnny's size for him to be able to not only handle but excel at that level (Hobey Baker, baby!) it really bodes well for his evaluation. He was also one of if not the top player on the recent US World Championships roster. Very nice.

From the evidence we have I clearly and firmly place Johnny above Sven in terms of current and potential value.

After putting up basically the most impressive college hockey season since the late 90s, Johnny came in and was the best player in a Flames sweater against the Canucks. He was already making players around him better.

He embarrasses the rest of the so called "talent" we have to offer on our roster.

Then he did the same thing for team USA at the WCs. Was feeding NHLer teammates, and impressing everyone. You could see by the looks on their faces. Went from a depth guy in the round robin to a first line player for that team in a group full of NHL/fringe talent.

His ceiling is about a mile above Sven's.

Well I think Sven came into our line up and was immediately one of our best players too..... not sure how things went south so fast in less than a year, but Sven is still a top prospect IMO.

not to take anything away from JG or anything

Johnny Hockey walks on water, pisses rainbows and sh*ts diamonds. Sven definitely doesn't do that. Advantage Gaudreau.

I heard Johnny God now that he is on the Flames payroll was brought in to stop Flood Waters from entering the Dome this year too. It's part of contract Double Advantage Gaudreau.

Sven didn't come in and instantly make players around him better. Sven came in and capitalized on a couple of rebounds and turnovers, and it got everyones attention. I suppose it's premature to say after one game, but the WCs which featured roughly the same level of competition sold me on Johinny working his magic at this level.

Sven can still be good. I won't take anything away from his potential (which is IMO a second line playmaking winger), but their ceilings or talent levels really aren't comparable.

When did this become a Sven vs Gaudreau thread?

Johnny Gaudreau pretty much saved Southern Alberta from flooding this year. He's not only a great hockey player, but also the greatest human to walk on the face of earth.

Those are all impressive moves and everything, but until I see a video of Sven pissing a rainbow or walking on water, he's still inferior to JG.

I'm all seriousness though, I like Sven as a prospect, but I think Gaudreau is on another level. To me Baertschi can be a decent second liner with possible first line upside. Gaudreau to me will probably be a first liner with possible franchise player upside.

Now that this thread has been hijacked into both a Trade Sven thread and a Gaudreau is Jesus thread I think we should complete the trifecta by arguing about Jankowski.

Lol, its like a kid who forgets his old new toy and moves on to the new new toy.

This old toy, Sven, still has a chance to be great.

It's actually not like that at all. Although I do agree that Baertschi still has the tools to be great, but I just don't see it unfolding that way.

Wow I'm sure glad both of those are Flames prospects and not property of other teams!

That's close to a universal rule about prospects: often the ones on the threshold are valued over the ones who have already had to face the reality of competing for an NHL job. The ones who haven't had to deal with the adversity most prospects face when making the jump often look better simply because the world hasn't yet blemished their ideal potential.

It will happen to Gaudreau as well, most likely. Right now he's pristine because he's all promise.

No kidding. Why do we have to bid them against each other? They can both be top-9 wingers. And Gaudreau is probably the best forward prospect in the NHL right now, so putting him above Sven on the depth chart is not exactly a slight.

I don't recall seeing as much hyperbole about any Flames prospect as I sometimes see here on Gaudreau.
