Scott Stevens is Matt Cooke with all the awards. Never liked or respected his play.

We get it. You're not impressed with Gaudreau. I'm not sure why you feel like you need to go on a one man crusade to "temper expectations," but you're welcome to your opinion.

Personally I don't see the "lack of commitment" in the defensive zone. He's had a number of good take-aways and backchecks throughout the tourney. He's never going to be a Selke candidate, but he's far a liability in his own end.

All those comments were fair until the last one... Give me a break 20 players with that kind of skill. He must be including Huselius and players like Nylander, Stillman.

Long time (25 years) since we have seen this kind of talent starting in the system, imo.
In no particular order:

Nillson, Makarov, Loob, Hrdina, Fleury, St.Louis, Hall, Mullen, Iginla, Nieuwendyk, Gilmour, Roberts, McDonald, Suter, Mackinnis, Housley,
Savard, Nylander, Huselius, Cammalleri,

I'm sure I missed someone.

I just believe that being lazy kind of takes away from the overall package. Every night you were going to see something from Fleury while Nilsson looked some nights like he wanted to be anywhere else but the ice.

I'd agree with the sentiment...but Kenta being lazy many nights doesnt take away from his pure talent level with the puck....and in that sense I dont think anyone comes close to him in terms of former Flames. Theo was a much better hockey player than Kenta, but no where near as talented...and there have been others as well.

He was flat out jaw-dropping at times....and invisible at others which is too bad because if he had the heart of a Theo or Iginla in their primes, he would have been in the conversation as best player on the planet.

You're severely underrating Johnny if you think half of these guys had more pure skill than Johnny. Even Iginla wasn't as "skilled" as him. Iginla was a great player because he was smart enough to make the right decisions with and without the puck, and he had a great shot. He was never a magician at handling the puck the way Johnny is.

Disagree completely.

Comparing Stevens to that guy is just ridiculous. The way Stevens played was the way the game was played in that era...yes he was viscious and even crossed the line a couple times, but never ever was he anything but doing what the position called for at the time and at a very high level.

You dont last in the NHL for over 1800 games and 21 years and land in the HOF without being very very good at your position...nevermind winning the Conn Smythe.

Actually, I'm impressed.
We are watching the games and commenting on the play.
Serves no purpose to just point out the good.

He was way better today btw. He can take the puck away on the backcheck, makes great passes and has a good shot.

I pointed out 20 guys with similar or better skill, that means there were hundreds worse, that's pretty good.

Shooting is a skill, passing is a skill, playing defense is a skill. Housley is the 4th highest scoring defenseman ever, I don't think Johnny beats that. Iginla is more skilled at scoring.

I'll agree that Johnny handles the puck better than any of these, but I'll disagree that he's more skilled

I didn't say all of them had more skill, some did and others were similar.

Never said he wasn't a great defenseman. Matt Cooke is probably one of the better 3rd line role players of the last decade. Doesn't change the fact that they were both head hunters. Stevens was just lucky he played in a time where there seriousness of concussions wasn't taken into account like it is today. The guy ended Lindros's career with a dirty hit much like Cooke ended Savard's career.

After watching Gaudreau in these WJ's I'd say Theoforever has had the most acurate assesment of JG. I don't disagree that once he starts hitting his prime he could be one hell of a player, but I think his intro into pro hockey is going to be a little more bumpy then a few on here think.

here's what i love; the 'temper your expectations' crowd has now had to stretch logic more than the 'he's a phenom' crowd.
rationally you should all just run out and buy your johnny hockey jerseys now and stop poking holes in a life raft.
