Sean Chu paraphrased:
I basically had a hallway conversation with a U of C professor who told me the bike lanes are bad. I won't name which professor, and I have no evidence to back it up, but the city data is GARBAGIO!

Thanks, I find my use of capitalization, grammar, and coherent sentence structure really allows me to get my point across without puzzling people unnecessarily.

fair enough, now that I am on a computer with a real keyboard, let me state this.
There seems to be a lot of words used by a few of councilpersons that I would suggest are borderline unprofessional or could of been orated better. Mr. Chu is the only one who seems to get flack for it (rightly so) ... it's interesting to say the least.

My GF bikes to work every day (except if it snowed the night before = slippery). She says the mornings are pretty crowded.
I went for lunch yesterday with a few friends and walked the 5 ave underpass. They have a new machine up that counts bikes going underneath. It was 11:45 and there were 199 counted.
This was a Thursday, weather was warmer but it was snowing and certainly wasnt sunny.
I walked by again at 12:45 and the counter was up to 240.
That's pretty decent for January.

Unless you're Sean Chu, and your tinfoil hat keeps triggering the counting devices. Garbage, I say!!
I'm nothing more than a recreational, fairweather cyclist, but I am always impressed by the year-round cyclists. There are a tonne of flashing red tail lights on the path along Parkdale/Memorial each morning, even when it is extremely cold and/or snowy. Obviously some hang up the bike for the winter, but there are more winter warriors than I realized.

You should stay away from computers with fake keyboards. The keyboards on the BESTÅ desks at Ikea aren't real.

It would be great if the city took care of the roads like they seem to do with the bike lanes. Just watch 2 trucks go up and down them for a couple hours. One is a sweeper and the other spits deicing liquid behind it. I wonder what the bill for that will be?

Plenty of them do it. Just seems like he get's the flack because he is not the most left wing of the group that do it. (Like our mayor and his twitter spats)

Less than the cost of a lawsuit from a paralyzed cyclist who lost control on the ice and slammed into oncoming traffic.

It would be great if the City took care of the recreation bike paths like they seem to do with roads that are Priority 1 routes. It is totally unfair that lower priority routes get lower quality treatment.

You just know that random city workers are getting phone calls from Chu all the time with his nonsense. I've worked with enough people at the City to know that Councillor inquiries are annoying, but can't imagine when Chu is the Councillor. Yikes.

My parents chatted with him briefly at a community event last weekend. I won't write their exact words, but let's just say that he didn't come across as particularly intelligent or at all useful.
And my folks, bless them, aren't necessarily the most "progressive" voters. "No, Dad, you couldn't build a Peace Bridge locally out of concrete for two million dollars."

After 13 years of cycling to work, this is my first year winter commuting, I used to think all those people were crazy. I got some studded tires, and haven't had a problem with slipping. It's actually warmer at -10 to cycle than stand around waiting for the bus. I'll probably bus colder than -15, but it hasn't happened yet. For any 3 seasoner's give it a try, it ain't so bad! I just dress like I would going cross country skiing.

Has a lawsuit like that actually been filed or is this just a random thought? Can I sue the AB Gov if I lose control of my car on Hwy2 in the winter?

The cycle track sensors seem to be believable for one way trips, the pathway sensors dont seem believable and are likely being tripped by pedestrians as well.
Does anyone have any counts as to the number of cars counted on any corresponding cycle track road way? Example, if 300 1-way bike trips on 6th street, how many 1-way car trips per lane at the same counter location?
The only way to truly measure whether the cycle track is an effective use of laneway is to determine how many trips it carries compared to the corresponding car lane average.
At what percentage difference in bike trips vs car at the same sensor point is considered a success. Is 10% bike trips vs car (300 bike vs 3000 car) a success? And then correlate that with data taken pre cycle track as I am sure drivers habits have changed on certain streets and funneled that traffic to other roads.
I dont think a random metric come up by someone working for the Cycletrack project is a correct way to measure its success or failure. Unless there is something that hasnt been shown at the cycle track open houses, the only success measures I have seen are what seem to be like random (maybe its not random and they just havent released the formula they used to get it) numbers assigned to each different cycle track. 300 daily riders here, 200 here, 600 here etc.

Depending on the counter, some count cars and pedestrians as well as bikes. In the left of the window you can turn that on or off.
You can look up traffic volumes here:
http://www.calgary.ca/Transportation...flow-maps.aspx
Keep in mind you can't do a direct comparison but these give you an idea of numbers.
You also can't just go by counts to rate success or failure of the project. This like reductions in interactions with cars, intangibles like 'feeling of safety" are also important. I think some people get hung up on just comparing raw numbers, that doesn't tell the whole story.
