I thought I had read an article a while ago that said it wasn't going to make all that much difference in funding to Canada Post, and it was an ideological move. Even the shortfall for a year or so was fudged to make it look like they were in trouble. Might have to hunt for that, after coffee.....

Was there ever anything discussed about how this would impact people with mobility issues?

You can pay $4 for parcel service and have stuff delivered to your door still. I loved, loved, loved getting mail to my door, but they put these boxes so close most people don't have to go further than 1.5 blocks. If they reversed this after spending so much on it I would be very pissed off.

I see the "Thanks Trudeau!" crowd is out early.
I live in a rural community and have a PO Box regardless, so this never affected me personally. But I agree that we should be looking at expanding Canada Post services to find new revenue streams to subsidize home delivery service instead of just cutting it down to the minimum. The latter just lacks any creative thought even if it is the easy way to go. The decision always seemed a little lazy to me and while this isn't a hill to die on, I think this is a positive direction.

Looks like they got my community box in just under the wire of this latest announcement. The location had been changed/delayed a number of times, I was kinda hoping to keep home delivery indefinitely, for purely selfish reasons.

They just poured the concrete across the street from my inlaws place for the new box. Now they're probably going to tear it up? Nice waste of money, jackasses.

I don't know the process to apply, but there are options available (at no charge) for people who need assistance to retrieve their mail.

My mailman really struggles to put my mail all the way into the mailbox. Half of it is hanging out the slot. When it rains or snows, my mail gets ruined. It would take him an extra second to do it properly.

Any time there is a government change, there are going to be changes in processes that "waste money". Democracy isn't cheap for a lot of reasons.
Did the previous government even look at alternatives? It's easier to destroy something than build something, which was Haper's MO. But just because something is more difficult to do, it doesn't mean that it isn't worth doing.

Home delivery is a waste of time and money. There's a reason they were moving to super mailboxes. It saves money. To backtrack on that is stupid.

2/3 of Canadians don't have home delivery. They should continue to subsidize delivery to the 1/3 that do?

Yup, waste more taxpayer money through unions; sounds about right.

I would prefer if someone could leave the mail on my counter, shred those things I don't need and just throw all the ads into the recycling for me. Is that asking too much?

First of all it isnt a 'lazy way to go' its 'more efficient.'
Trust me, 'more efficient' isnt Canada Post's Motto. You wont see it emblazoned in Bronze over the doors of their offices.
You ever live in an apartment or condo? Does the letter carrier go door to door?
Find new revenue streams? Sure. Like what? Oh, a Government subsidized service competing against various private companies?
You know what happened the last time Canada Post went and found new revenue streams? You know what they found? Junk Mail. It pays great. Thanks a lot.
Do you know what it takes to pay a letter carrier over their career? The whole point is: fewer letter carriers. They cost a fortune. Between obscenely high pay for completely unskilled labour and their benefits and pensions cutting the number of letter carriers is absolutely crucial.
It makes tons more sense to move to superboxes and provide an alternative service for seniors and the disabled.

This is the first big thank you to a Union that ran ads for the Liberals during the election so they didn't have to get their hands dirty.
Next up, a big boost in funding to the CBC to thank them for the Friends of CBC ads during the election.
Frankly this is just pissing away money at this point.
Home delivery is obsolete, and the smart move would be to charge a small service fee on your bills if you're still receiving paper copies instead of electronic.
You want to solve mobility issues for people picking up mail, get them electronic mail, that way they don't have to walk three blocks to pick up 15 pizza brochures, 2 real estate ads, a 10 pound catalog from Ikea and a letter from their MP.
