apparently he could face deportation if convicted(not likely IMO):

Lawyer: The answer to possible deportation for #Varlamov is complicated. Yes, if convicted of charge, he could be deported. #avalanche (1/3)

Immigration court is separate from criminal court. Assault charges fall into separate categorizes for immigration court. (2/3)

Immigration judge makes decision off court documents, not arrest report. Words such as "knowingly, negligently or reckless" are key. (3/3)

Obviously just internet rumours, but the timeline makes sense, and helps make the trade make more sense too.
Where there's smoke there's fire. It was the first I had heard of it, just curious if anyone else had.

I think it has more to do with Downie not being a good fit, or accepting his role on the Avs team, and him being moved because of it.

Except for the fact that this trade caused mass confusion everywhere. All you heard was how little sense this trade made on Colorado's side. Can't deny that this rumour makes sense.

All I heard was it made sense from Colorado's side because they weren't going to re-sign Downie and Talbot was familiar with Roy because of some connection with Benoit Groulx.
The Avs got a guy signed to a reasonable deal to fit on their 3rd line which is key with the contracts they have/will have with ROR, Duchene, Landeskog and MacKinnon.

IMO people just tried to come up with an explanation for a trade that they couldn't understand, but this could very well just have been a pure hockey trade. Talbot is a proven winner and he adds experience that the Avs could use, while Downie is a UFA at the end of the season. Who knows, his salary demands could have been simply too high for the Avs and/or he indicated to them that he intends to test free agency? Talbot on the other hand is signed until 2016 to a very reasonable deal. And with Stastny becoming UFA and O'Reilly becoming RFA with a huge offer sheet on the table, it's not a mistake to add a center for depth purposes. I see no reason to think that this was anything else than a simple hockey trade with some regards to free agency and salary.
EDIT: what moon said.

Elliot Friedman was on the FAN and said Downie was traded because he punched Landeskog in a practice during the preseason. Sakic and Roy had been looking to trade him since.
But I do love player affair rumours. The Janney/ Shannahan one seems to have some truth to it.

What a guy, Aliu, Landeskog... he just has a thing for beating up his own teammates. I'll continue to hope he finds no further success.

Heh. People can't accept that the world is mundane and the boring explanation is usually the right one.

I wouldn't exactly call Friedman's interpretation of the trade mundane or boring. While not as juicy as the rumour I had posted (then deleted), it's hardly mundane.
I never stated it as fact, just brought it up to see if anyone else had heard it. Truth is, no one knows the truth, except for the players/management.

This does not look good for the girl... Her attorney asked for a fee when Sports Illustrated approached him for an interview:

Quote:
Kwak called Vavrinyuk’s attorney, Robert Abrams, and, to quote from the piece:
When contacted by SI on Nov. 5 about the possibility of interviewing his client, Abrams asked, “What kind of fee are you offering?” When told SI does not pay for interviews, he replied, “Oh, O.K. She’s a little tired from giving interviews. I’m sure you can understand. Thanks so much for the call.” He then hung up.

Um, okay:

Now comes Russian Olympic general manager Alexei Kasatonov chiming in believing that the netminder's play since the arrest shows that he's innocent.
From R Sport:“Semyon’s in good form now, continuing to show that he’s one of the best goaltenders in the NHL and showing with his game that the truth is on his side,” Russian national team general manager Alexei Kasatonov said on the website of the SKA St. Petersburg KHL team.
In another apparent reference to the domestic abuse charge, Kasatonov said that Varlamov “is not that kind of guy and would not be capable of such a dirty deed.”
In his nine appearances since being arrested, Varlamov has posted a 2.39 goals against average and a .922 save-percentage, which is somehow a reflection that he'll soon be in the clear, in Kasatonov's mind.

Yeah, using save percentage as an indication of innocence? Dubnyk must have killed someone!
