There are countless legit goal scorers who never made much of their time in the NHL.
Panel Brendl was as legit a goal scorer as they come. He had 22 career points in the NHL.
I was chatting with a friend about Yakupov this afternoon, and had the same thought about Brendl.
Yakupov has the skill, clearly. But does he have the desire to play a complete game? The answer at this point seems to be no. He is only 20 though, so there is lots of time for him to figure it out. If you're Edmonton though, you just have to hope that Eakins' attempt to condition him into a more complete player doesn't result in a return to Russia.

“I’m going to play my game. I’m not going to change but maybe play better without the puck, or forecheck more, but I love playing with the puck. I really don’t like skating all the time, and forechecking, and hitting somebody every shift. I don’t think it’s my game.”
One of the more stunning admissions by a player in a very long time.
A trainwreck is about to take place....and its sure nice knowing the Flames wont be in the middle of it.

Yes it is because he is Russian that he is getting benched and not because of the moronic "I don't have to skate, hit or play defense" comment.
Schultz may be sucking but it is doubtful that his attitude is close to that bad.
I don't know why they would sit Hall at least he is trying to do something out there unlike Eberle who looks like he will only try if the other 4 guys set him up for an empty net tap in. Plenty of passengers so far this year for the Oilers Hall is one of the few, maybe only top 6 guy, that appears to give a damn.
They give up 5 goals a game (well less after tonight)... they lose every game. Yakapov hasn't been good... neither have the rest of them. They are scapegoating him for all of the other flaws they have.
Its not like scratching him has led them to being any better... they are still losing every game. RNH and Hall are still on for virtually every goal against they have. RNH is sitting at -9 already in 4 games.
As much as I like to see the oilers suffer, I have to say that a large part of their problems are a combination of 2 small issues:
1) They have awful goaltending
2) They lack a number 1 defenseman
The solutions, as perhaps suggested elsewhere within this forum is to
a) trade for James Reimer, Victor Fasth, Brian Elliot or Josh Harding in return for a pick. I think Fasth, Elliot, Reimer would cost a 3rd. And Harding would cost a 2nd.
b) Trade for a defenseman. I could see a nice fit with Philly (involving the Schenn's) or NYR (involving Galliardi or Del Zotto). The bait would be Yakupov
I know the Leafs had Morgan Rielly #1.
I know the Flames had Alex Galchenyuk #1.
Seems like Columbus could've had Murray #1.
Wouldn't surprise me if we learned a bunch of other teams didn't have Yakupov #1.
Some years there is a consensus #1. That year was not one of them.
Jankowski. Im pretty sure I've heard Feaster say Jankowski is going to be the best player in that draft.

just to be clear, you're really suggesting a single 3rd round pick will get you Fasth or Reimer? Good luck with that.

Berube would eat that kid for lunch if he landed there IMO.

The difference is that while Hall and Nugent-Hopkins are getting points despite being atrocious defensively, Yakupov was just as atrocious defensively and is literally doing nothing on offence.
