I don't think Monahan would develop as well in the OHL as he would with the Flames. I hope he stays.

Good effort, but they are a young team who will learn how to play with the lead.
Only complaint I have is how Ovechkin was ALWAYS open at the left circle on the pp. He is the biggest threat yet nobody was cheating on his side at all giving him free reign to shoot one timer after one timer. They need to identify him as a big threat and try to shut him down even if it means cheating a little.

Monahan/Baertschi/Jones were over their head. Galiardi took a selfish penalty that might have cost us the game. Ramo wasn't very good. I thought bottom pairing D struggled. The team gave up a 3-goal lead that they should have been able to protect.
But I don't care. The team worked hard, we saw really good performances from young guys like Backlund and Brodie. The vets were making a case to sign an extension or showing they will get us something at the deadline. Again, the team worked very hard. And we almost beat a power house team.
Its a rebuild. There are going to be bumps and lots to complain about. But take pleasure in what goes right and have patience with what has gone wrong otherwise this will be a LOOOOOONG rebuild for some of you.

Sure. But first, he is Ovechkin. Easier said then done. Second, most of the time that was on the PP or 4 on 4. That makes it really tough to do.
I thought the Flames did a good job of stopping him early. But once the PP started rolling in and once he started going he is tough to stop. That is why he is one of the best in the world.

I can live with dropping in SO to an Ovechkin goal.
But I have a harder time with the giving up the 3-0 lead.. Even as a rebuilding team, I don't just give a pass on that. They held them off the board just fine for the first part of the game. But again, first game of the year, it's not all gonna go off without a hitch. Can't really over evaluate here.
Ramo was 29/31 even strength. Pretty good. If it weren't for the Caps ridiculous powerplay (and biggest crutch, imo) and those mental mistakes resulting in said PPs, we'd be fine. Ridiculous how the puck is almost heat seeking when it comes off of Ovechkin's stick. The goal off Hudler was just back breaking. But good players make their own luck, I guess.
Those saying Monahan is better off in Ottawa after the one game tonight are realllllly jumping the gun. You expect the kid of fit right in his first NHL game? He did for the most part, but give him a few games to learn the ropes a bit, geezus. He's a fast learner, and can adapt. He'll look better tomorrow and it'll just continue upwards after that.
So mad that I had to leave for the 3rd. Can't wait to get a real Flames hockey fix tomorrow night.
I think Ramo was good though. But shootouts are most definitely not his strong suit. Wish we could use Berra just for the sake of SO, haha.
Hope to see Colborne tomorrow! Or are they sticking to this "earned" spot strategy, and will only rotate him in when someone drops the ball?

Was no worse than last year and at times looked even better. This rebuild should have started a long time ago.

Oh and Bouma is quickly becoming my new favorite Flames grinder.
Heart and soul guy with a good nose for the net. Got to love everything he brings!

On an unrelated note did anybody else see the shot of the Capital's bench when they won the shootout? Actually looked like a couple players shoving each other, Joel Ward and somebody else maybe? My first thought was it was just a couple guys horsing around because of the win- but it looked a little more serious than that when I saw another highlight.

I saw that. Reminded me of an Elaine Benes "Get Out" shove when she plows Kramer through the door.

Also, it will be interesting to see who the odd men out are when Cammi and Colborne get into the lineup. Street is obvious, but after that I have no idea.

I thought they looked pretty good. Russell was in over his head as were the other bottom pair guys. Special teams continue to suck but that's nothing new and i'm not sold on Ramo. Even a average starter has to rob a goal or two a game.

Bouma does remind me a lot of Prust so hopefully the Flames get it right this time and let the kid stick around.

Well I just wrote a big thing on Bouma and how he is like Prust with out reading the above. I am glad that others feel the same way.

Happy with the effort, pleasantly surprised by some of the performances (Gio, Russell) but disappointed by the result.

Had a hell of a lot of fun, shook Ramo's hand after the game. Excellent night, and the Flames played way more exciting than in previous years. I'll take these young guys!

Enjoyed the game and it looks like this years Flames will at least be entertaining. Loving the effort as well. It will be interesting to see how the the next 8 games look for Monahan but it was a good first game and one to build off of.

Didn't catch the game, had to work, but from what I saw in the highlights, Ramo seemed a little shaky. Not blaming the whole thing on him, and correct me if I'm wrong, but that's how it seemed to me. Like I said, didn't get to see the game, just commenting based on what NHL.com showed.

Didn't see much of the game but saw enough. When it was 4-1 I called a 6-5 Caps win in OT wasn't off by much. Historically 3 goal leads are bad.
TJ's Penalty was bad but even if he didn't get one there the refs would have called one later in the period to give the caps a chance. always happens in the new nhl
Sven may as well have been Iggy in the shoot out
Hudler may as well have taken a slapshot from outside the blue line.
All in all will take a point against a better team. I would have bet against the flames if I was in vegas
