Naked people I have no problem with as I don't see nudity in art as obscenity. I think as a culture we are way too sensitive about nudity and sex. At the same time, there are tattoos out there I wouldn't want my kid seeing. If it's tasteful I am fine with it.

I had the exact same thought while sitting at the lake this weekend.

Considering how many tattoos involve demons, corpses, skulls, gore, violence, etc...a boob or two isn't really something to get concerned about. If wer're talking about a full on beaver shot, that's something different, but I have yet to see anything like that.

I'll echo the other comments about our society being far too puritan, especially when it comes to the female form. I'm not really sure where Canada picked that up. Europe, including the UK, has a much better attitude towards that stuff.

I have tattoos and my boyfriend doesn't like them so I can understand both the OP and his girlfriend here. Out of respect for him, the larger piece I am planning has been put on hold indefinitely. It will happen but likely after we have kids and grow old together. He can live with the two I have, I can live without getting more for a while.

I will say one thing- the whole Chinese calligraphy tattoos on white girls for tramp stamps is ######ed. If you don't speak Chinese, how do you know the tattoo artist isn't writing 'ho' or 'dirty beeotch' on your back instead of 'harmony' or 'peace.' It makes no sense.

And yes these are pretty much correctly translated, although I don't see the problem with #11. And #8 is probably what the person wanted it to say, but it's just generally ######y.

There's a difference between selling out, and knowing how commerce works.

The only way you can live without regards to money as a creative person is you if you already have money to begin with, or if it's not your primary source of sustenance. Nobody can live on paint fumes. At some stage, even a fine artist has to deal with benefactors. Show me someone who rose to the top on their own without any regard for money, and I'll show you someone who has family wealth. It's actually kind of depressing when you see how many famous artists came from money.

However, the rest of us have to deal with reality. If you want to sustain yourself professionally, you have to at least understand the rules, if not always play by them. But that doesn't mean you have to sacrifice your integrity and artistic vision. It's not always a choice between money or your integrity. The notion that creatives types have to be poor and live in a box to be considered "legit" is outdated, and kind of ridiculous.
