There's a difference between selling out, and knowing how commerce works.
The only way you can live without regards to money as a creative person is you if you already have money to begin with, or if it's not your primary source of sustenance. Nobody can live on paint fumes. At some stage, even a fine artist has to deal with benefactors. Show me someone who rose to the top on their own without any regard for money, and I'll show you someone who has family wealth. It's actually kind of depressing when you see how many famous artists came from money.
However, the rest of us have to deal with reality. If you want to sustain yourself professionally, you have to at least understand the rules, if not always play by them. But that doesn't mean you have to sacrifice your integrity and artistic vision. It's not always a choice between money
or your integrity. The notion that creatives types have to be poor and live in a box to be considered "legit" is outdated, and kind of ridiculous.
