I can't believe Fairmont was ranked #5 on their list last year. This is a neighbourhood mostly surrounded by an industrial area. It's basically Ogden without the parks and river. I think their Community Association must have raged some sort of Calgarypuck style Jihad.

Holy crap, I hadn't even noticed Huntington Hills was in the top 50. I love the area, I grew up there ... but man it's pretty crappy now.

Toronto is a better city because it has a GREAT lake.
Objective fact!
Not surprised where my neighbourhood of Renfrew lies.. But at least it's super close to Bridgeland, and no danger of flooding.

lol, Downtown living is superior then Lake Bona Vista. You get the river, the buildings, Princess Island Park, the mall, people, food, 5 minute walk to work........the list just goes on.
Downtown >>>>>>> Bona Vista
yaye me.

No kidding!
Some of us dont have filthy little children with their grubby hands and slobbery faces, running noses and crap-filled diapers that need to be constantly entertained by splashing around in disgusting stagnant water.

Or some of us do, not me, and don't want their slobbery children in that disgusting stagnant water.
I do believe that one's domicile to work proximity is the key to living a satisfied life.

We thought about moving to Lake Bonavista before we learned how preachy they are.

It's a strange group we have here sometimes. Every person I know in real life would answer "true" to the following statement: All things being equal, it is nicer to live by an amenity-filled lake than to not.

Going through a stroll through surface parking sounds wonderful.
VS.
I know which one I'd rather wander through for the pub or groceries.
There is a reason people drive down to Kensington on the weekends and not the Lake Bonavista mini-mall.

That's only true if you work downtown. Lots of places around the city have better things to offer than that, plus no fear of contriving tuberculosis.
Take out the proximity to work as a plus, downtown or central living, isn't the awesome sauce that people make it out to be. This is especially true if you no longer are in your bar hopping days.

When does Sliver move to Bonavista Nfld? I mean, if a manmade puddle in south Calgary is that absolutely kickass, imagine having the whole North Atlantic?
And I'll bet he could still make it to North Calgary in 25 minutes. Half hour tops.

My post was more of a poke at Silver, however if one works in DT there is no better place to live in my subjective opinion.
As I said in a later post the most important value of my domicile is its proximity to work.

no, but the use of subjective reduces that argument.
Further, as my wife and I do plan on having kids we have prepared by purchasing a lot to build on in Marda Loop.

Commuting to work is probably among the top 3 stresses people have in their lives, especially in this city. It doesnt bother some people and other people would rather fight a lion empty-handed than have to do it every day.
As for kids, another top 3 stressor, you just have to deal with it. You're the one who decided to throw your biological material all over the place, if you want a kid and thereby have to commute then thats a choice you make.
All kinds of options there, none of which, by they way, that have anything to do with 'lakes.'

The question "Do you have kids?" is relevant because it provides insight into your frame of reference and scope of experience. A community should offer something to every age group, and this article - though obviously flawed - is at least trying (in spirit) to find the best community or to at least get people talking about it.
Living downtown is good for a working Joe with an office job for a period in his/her life. I'd argue that would be for five to 10 years after graduating university and before kids come. And if you don't have kids, downtown living is good until maybe mid-50s. It's not as good for kids (and adults, as a result) as a residential area in the opinion of the overwhelming majority of Calgarians who choose to live in the 'burbs, members of CalgaryPuck notwithstanding.

This isnt even an answer, its just repeating almost exactly what I said.
Generally people move out of downtown when they have kids, then you trade the stress of your kids over to the stress of commuting.
All I said is that its a decision made based on different stressors that in no way reflects upon the quality of communities, let alone lakes.

It's almost as if it would make your answer a subjective one, as opposed to objective.
