They aren't rare cases. Bottom line is many fans have been pointing out for a couple of years that the Flames are overly reliant on Kipper and Iginla but have no options to replace either aging player. It has been a primary argument of those suggesting a rebuild. It is compounded by the fact that the Flames aren't winning. They are fighting tooth and nail to be merely adequate. And failing.
The fact is this is now catching up to the Flames in a hard way. Listing off a bunch of kids that are years away from the NHL and suggesting they are the successorship plan is ridiculous. The only players in the system that is NHL ready is Irving and the Flames attempt at developing him has been very poorly done.
Now they are left at trying to replace Kipper on the fly. That means losses and that means wasted contracts.
The Flames management of having a plan B that goes beyond Kipper is indefensible. That doesn't stop people from trying. But it remains indefensible.
