Since you quoted my response, maybe you can tell me where did I write that the tragedy of his grandmother and 'girlfriend' dying affected his performance?

Even if think Manti Te'o later discovered it was all a hoax and ran with it for the attention, Te'o really did think before that Michigan State game that his grandmother died and his 'girlfriend' died on the same day. Or, if you think Te'o was in on the hoax the whole time, he still had to deal with the death of his grandmother before that game. He played pretty well in that Michigan State game, and for the rest of the regular season.

You were suggesting he could use it to improve his draft stock.

To which I gave my response ... where is the breakdown there?

I think it helped add to his reputation as a leader and character guy.

Look at all the BS that has gone on about Ray Lewis being so great leader. It often isn't truth that builds these labels but reputation and hype from stuff like this.

Don't give him too much credit. That game was against quite possibly the worst passing offense in the country and against a banged up and outmatched offensive line. A competent MLB would have looked great, which actually goes for a number of ND games this season. When he faced an elite team he looked below average at best.

I went from not believing Manti at all to pretty much believing his side to now who knows what. The fact that he and roniahah knew each other doesn't look good for him. Although in the catfish show, the hoaxer often knows the guy.

And he provides what he calls phone records, but they are really just spreadsheets?? That's pretty weak.

I am leaning to the gay cover up angle. And wouldn't really have any issues with that except for the whole lying about her dying of cancer thing.

The whole lying about visiting this girl and exaggerating the "internet relationship" is absurd on Te'o's part but it shouldn't be forgotten the kid lost him Mother which was real and i can't imagine who difficult that is for anyone.

Te'o was an idiot regarding the whole fake girlfriend thing though. He should never have played it up the way he did.

He did? I think you mean his grandmother.

The gay-cover up is looking even more likely with this revelation. No matter what this story only figures to get more effed up.

His interview is/was on Katie Couric's show today. Just caught a few moments. Apparently the girl he was talking to on the phone was Ronaiah the entire time, not a girl at all. And they did communicate over the internet via Skype or some other application (can't remember what he said), but every time they talked that way he could only see a black screen, he couldn't see a face. She (Ronaiah) was saying that she could see his face, so something must have been wrong with his webcam. He lied to his father about meeting her in person.

Seems like a nice enough guy, just either not very bright or very gullible. Or maybe a bit of both.

Was this fake girlfriend presenting herself to Manti as being Mormon? That may explain why a guy, who probably could hook up with any number of girls at ND, might have been in an online relationship. Probably not too many Mormon girls at Notre Dame, and if he is forbidden from dating non-Mormons, well...

No, but his mother was apparently trying to convert his fake girlfriend to mormonism!

Impossible. Catholic girls? Not a chance. Not until marriage

If that is a dude, then pretty good acting. I was expecting her/him to sound like Rosemary from Jim Rome, or high pitch eric from Howard Stern doing his Kelly Clarkson voice.

Did they have Ronaiah imitate the voice during the interview to match it with the voicemails? Also, why would you keep voicemail messages for that long? Still not convinced.

One crazy theory thrown out there is that Tuiasosopo may be what Samoans consider another gender, Fa'afafine.

Per Wiki:
Quote:
Fa'afafine are the gender liminal, or third-gendered people of Samoa. A recognized and integral part of traditional Samoan culture, fa'afafine, born biologically male, embody both male and female gender traits. Their gendered behavior typically ranges from extravagantly feminine to mundanely masculine.

After watching the interview today with Manti, I didn't learn anything new that I didn't already know.

However I did learn how much this has affected his family. For Brian and Ottilia to see their son getting blasted in the media and social media the way he has been has got to be heartbreaking. It just makes me hate the media even more and how they've ridiculed this kid and portrayed him to be some scumbag who used this fake girlfriend to gain public exposure without any factual evidence supporting their claims. And oh yeah he's gay now? Right.

It's still baffling to me that people can still think that Te'o was involved in this thing even after everything that's come out in the past week or so. Regardless of how crazy it would be to have a strictly online relationship with someone without ever meeting, it does happen and it happens a lot. Manti wasn't the first to get duped and he won't be the last. Watch the TV show Catfish. It's pretty terrible what these people do.

This whole story is just really bizarre and sick. For someone to lie and deceive another human being like that is just terrible. I know Manti has already forgiven him cause that's just who he is but I hope that guy get's what's coming to him. Karma's a bitch.

The only thing Te'o can be accused of is being too naive and too trustworthy. But anybody that knows him says that's just the type of person he is. It goes to his Mormon faith and how they are as a people. It's just sad what's transpired. I really feel for his family and what they must be going through.

Regardless of all this, I hope Te'o can put this all behind him and he can move on with his life. Hopefully this story goes away and he can start focusing on the next step in his career in preparing for the draft. Wherever he goes (still believe it's first round), I hope he kicks ass in the NFL.

Everything that has come out in the past week or so has been carefully calculated by Teo and his PR people, right down to doing his only on camera interview with Couric, who just happens to be represented by the same PR person. So forgive me if I'm not the sucker you are.

Also, what's with the 'my buddy Manti tone? Are you friends with him? Perhaps online?
