Let's break down what the Leafs and Flames are doing.
The Leafs are giving 20,000 fans the first game free at a cost of about $2 million. So 20,000 people who can afford Leafs tickets get a slight break on an already cheaper season of hockey.
The Flames offers do the following:
- Save STHs and regular fans a bunch of money of Flames gear. My STH buddy had been eyeing my pro jersey, and is now going to pull the trigger. So we will save more than if we were leafs STHs.
- Give the Fanattic employees who have had their hours cut a whole bunch of extra shifts due to being super busy.
- Give the Saddledome cossesion staff and business owners more business to kick start the year. My buddy who ownes one of the non-Flames run consessions is pumped about this. He said it's going to be great for him and his staff; especially after he had to lay people off and take a side job himself.
- The charities that sell 50/50 will also benefit. Not only for the first 2 games, but this has a trickle down effect. After the World Juniors where we saw pots reaching $120K, the following Flames game had a pot over $70K. And the best part of this, the Flames likely won't have to kick in a single penny to bring the pot up to $100k.
So for about 10% of what the Leafs are spending, the Flames are having a much broader reach with their offers. They are getting people excited about hockey, and helping the people hurt the most by the lockout. Because let's face it; as much as I missed the NHL, I never had to tell my son that we could no longer afford the brand name Kraft dinner.
