^^^

There's some pretty good players on your list who have no chance of being bought out.

I think Yzerman has to buy out Lecavelier given this opportunity.

The team would have a pretty clean slate heading into the 2014 offseason if Kiprusoff, Cammalleri, Wideman, and Bouwmeesters contracts clear out.
Wideman is going to have to be really terrible for the Flames to buy him out after just giving him that deal. A lot of people tend to forget that Feaster didn't just pull his name out of the UFA bag in June. He was a player that Feaster, Weisbrod, pro scouting and Hartley all agreed was a good fit for this team. If Wideman is as bad as some of you think he will be this doesn't bode well for the direction of the Flames. I tend to believe he will be okay myself.

First post for 2013 might as well stay consistant. The Flames should buy out Stajan if with Cervenka being gone for who knows how long with this blood medical issue.
Take advantage of this out and buy out Stajan.

I think that if the Flames can't trade Stajan to a team that can benefit from lower actual dollars compared to his cap hit, he will be bought out this summer.

I'm more interested to see who else around league gets bought out, and if some of these buy outs create an opportunity for the Flames to acquire a quality player who was just carrying a scary contract.

For example, some have mentioned Lecavalier or Hossa potentially being bought out.

heatley - No chance
koivu - Why bother
brier - No chance
hossa - HAHAHAHAHAHA
havlat - No chance
Leino - This would be interesting.
Myers - Absolutely no chance in hell
erhoff - No chance
gorges - Nope
laich - Why would you even think this.
green - They just re-signed him, wtf?
liles - Why?
lecavelier - Maybe.
j. williams - No chance
franzen - Hahahahahaha
martin - Doubt it but interesting idea.
gleason - Didn't they just sign him?
umberger - There is no one else in CBJ, no.
beachemin - No, 3.5 is a reasonable hit.
gaustad - Stupid contract but doubt it.
b. campbell - Was an all star, but maybe next summer if things don't go well.
Almost none of those guys are getting bought out and you didn't even mention the obvious ones like Ballard and Stajan.

If you told me we could sacrifice 32 games of the season to be able to cancel Ville Leino's contract... I'd have probably been okay with it.

Anybody know when the buy-out period begins? Is it before free agency?

It will be interesting to see what happens, but I'll be surprised if we see any buyouts on the really long-term deals.

If the Lightning buy out Lecavalier, they'll still have to pay him $2.1M per year for the next 14 years. They might still be forced to do it to be able to ice a full roster next season, but that's a lot of money to be paying out and getting nothing for it.

I think the more likely buyouts will be the guys in the latter years of long-term deals that are now making much less than their cap hits (although, those guys are also potential trade bait to floor teams like the Islanders and Coyotes).

I'd say that the only sure bets for buyouts are Redden and Gomez.

Yes with the team that bought him out being the only ineligible team to sign him (with normal buyouts and, I assume, the 2 non-compliance buyouts).

You have to figure that will happen. Still not sure what Regier was thinking on that deal.

In regards to Luongo why would any team trade for him knowing that the Canucks only have a small handful of teams Luongo will accept a trade to and if they can't trade him they will be forced to buy him out? If you are the Leafs or Panthers wouldn't you rather just wait until he hits free agency so you can sign him at a more appropritate contract seeing you know you are on his short list already? I just don't see the logic of any team trading assets for that boat anchor contract when they know that the Canucks will have to buy him out. It's win-win as they don't have to give up anything and they get an above average goaltender signed to an appropriate deal.

Agreed, unless an additional asset flows from the Canucks to the team that trades for Luongo to make it worth it to that team. The Leafs and Panthers can wait for Luongo to be bought out and then it's a simple matter of reaching a term/rate that's agreeable to both sides.

Would a higher level pick or prospect be an adequate asset to make that horrid contract worthwhile?

The only problem with that is that there are at least 2 teams that want him. If the Leafs wait for a buy out then they know he will probably sign in Florida, unless they offer a bunch of money, probably a lot more than his current cap hit. If the Leafs want Luongo then it makes sense for them to trade for him.
