I learned something new yesterday and that is rotating targets with 'R'
Yes, that is important. This game desperately needs a tutorial to help out new players.
ECM is an Electronic Countermeasure. It can only be equipped on 4 mechs at the moment and what it does is it emits a field, 180m radius, around the carrier. Any mech inside an ECM field cannot be targeted unless you are within 180m of your target or a friendly mech with ECM set to disrupt is within range of their ECM carrier. This is why you want a TAG if you're running LRMs because ECM does not disrupt a TAG.

That makes sense. For some reason on my first game yesterday, I wasn't able to fire my lasers against an ECM mech at close range. I thought I forgot to activate the '1' on my weapon control, but it was good. Needless to say, I've got destroyed in seconds.
With the next few days off, I hope I can find time between the Christmas garbage to bang out a few matches. ECM is going to hamper my current playstyle, but that's ok, the extra cash should allow me to finally try my hand at a heavier mech.
Any of the newer mechs notable for consideration?

I have 3 variants of the Cataphract (1X, 3D and 4X) and I am liking it a lot. The 4X has 4 ballistic slots but they're all in the arms so it limits what you can fit in there. I tried a build with 4 x AC5s and it was okay. I know a popular build on the forums is to put 4 x AC2s or 2 x UAC5s & 2 x AC2s. I ended up throwing in an XL 255 (the 4X has a lower engine limit than the other variants) an LB-10X in each arm and a large laser in the center torso. 8-10 tons of ammo.
The 3D is very awesome though. Currently I am running mine with a STD 280, 2 x UAC5 and 4 x Medium Lasers. It's the most expensive variant because it comes with a XL 280 but it is also the only jump jet capable variant if you're into that. Haven't tried the 1X yet.

Except with the 'fixing' of jumpjets, you need to use 4 tons just to get it to lift off the ground.
So PGI has released a couple of really good patches in the last couple of weeks. They've significantly improved game performance across the board. Yesterday they added a pre-round/post round screen with more detailed statistics as well as a "death screen" explaining how you died.
Heat was reduced on the Large Pulse Laser, ER Large Laser, PPC, ER PPC. Along with the addition of the new hero mech "Pretty Baby," the Awesome has seen its max engine size increase from 290 to 300.
The camo system has also been revamped with players now being able to permanently unlock a camo pattern for all chasis of a mech type (ie. You buy it for an Atlas and you can apply it to any Atlas variant). Similarly, when you now buy a colour you own it for good. Colors are unlocked for all mechs. If you've spent either MC or C-Bills on camo/colours you will be refunded. They are currently having a sale on colours and the dazzle pattern until the 12th.
The next patch drops on Feb 19th and will include a mechlab UI overhaul. This is something we've been asking for since closed beta. With this change you'll be able to see much more detailed information about weapons and equipment.
They'll also be releasing the Trebuchet medium mech and the new Alpine map, which is at least twice the size of Caustic Valley.
I am still not a huge fan of the MC pricing model. I feel that most items are extremely overpriced. Especially when it comes to the hero mechs and cockpit items. I am happy to see them change their camo pricing because the previous model screamed price gouge. With that said, I've yet to spend any of my Founder's money but it looks as though it will mostly end up going towards mechbays.
I am excited to play this new map and get my hands on the Trebuchet. I haven't bought a new mech since the Cataphract and I've been looking forward to a new medium mech.

Most notable change in the last ~2 weeks is the improvements to the netcode. It's no longer necessary to lead lights with lasers, if you hit something on your screen, the server is properly registering hits.
Yesterdays patch as well corrected a mesh vs model hit issue, where if you hit someone in the rear CT it would sometimes register the damage on the front CT instead.
ALSO
We at the Word Of Lowtax have a couple different mech-fitting tools, but one of our chief engineers (Hubis) has made his Mechromancer tool available for anyone online to use as they wish.
Here you will be able to build, tweak, save, and share mech builds from the comfort of your browser! Constantly being updated as well, and completely free. It also includes the Mechronimicon for quick Mech, weapon & engine info, all in handy, easy to read charts! Edited the OP to include the Mechromancer link.
I am enjoying my Trebuchet 5N. I was really tempted to grab the 3C with that 390 max engine but after messing around in the mechlab I figured it probably wasn't worth it. A 390XL is 30 tons and if you max the armor except on the legs you're looking at another 12 tons which only leaves 6 tons for weapons/ammo. I think the 5N is the better mech if you're looking for an LRM support platform. Identical hardpoints as the 3C but the 4th energy slot moves from the center torso to the right arm.
Right now I am running my 5N with XL 280, 2 x LRM 15 (3 tons of ammo), 4 x Medium Laser and an AMS (1 ton of ammo). I keep debating whether to drop a medium laser in favour of a tag and I am also thinking about losing the AMS so I can swap in a BAP.
I think the next one I will pick up will be the 7K. I'd like to try out a Gauss/PPC build as I've had some really great success with my Cataphract running 2 x PPCs and 1 Gauss.
The new map is great. Get those long range weapons out!
New map is awesome. I got to play it once last night but had a lot of fun on it. Much better than Alpine. Make sure to go into your options and take off Throttle Decay and Arm Lock.
Edit: You're House Liao? HAHA... you will be crushed scum.

Throttle decay I can see as being pretty good for certain newbie types (my wife really likes it), and binding arm lock to a button is much better than having it always on.

Don't be shocked that goons would want to play as the cartoonishly evil villains. Though, we also RP as Tetatae, but that's mainly to cheese off grognards.
Regardless, the Mumble is open to all factions, even an FRR jackboot like yourself!

What's not to love about freaking space Vikings? If that isn't reason enough to join the FRR then the future merger with Clan Ghost Bear should be.

Anyone try out the Highlander yet? Thinking about grabbing a 733C. Came up with a pretty interesting build involving 2 UAC5, 3 SRM 6 and 2 Medium Lasers.
