I get that its difficult to fix things the way everyone wants, or the way they think it should be, but there has to be more done to make it realistic. I dont use Be a GM mode, but in a Be a Pro this is what drives me nuts:
1. Coaching - horrible. Teams' leading scorer doesn't see a second of power play time until Game 52. Surely it can be programed to through out different players every now and then.
And on that note, if the coach can't understand that sometimes there is a good penalty, or set tasks that are illogical - hey maybe I'd get some action on the power play if you played me on it - then don't bother. And does it really make sense to throw out your number 1 PP unit, have the play get whistled five seconds later after a save and throw out a completely new unit?
2. I get you can turn it off, but when your commentators can't even keep track of which team tied it up, then again, why bother?
3. I dont know if its just me, but seems no matter what team I play on, we cant win faceoffs to save our lives. So if Jonathan Huberdeau is 2 for 13 in the draw is he really going to be taking defensive faceoffs?
4. I can't imagine a team that spends more time passing in the neutral zone accomplishing nothing then the computer.
5. Why is my defence partner, no matter who it is, always horrible at getting the puck out?

I think the biggest problem with the NHL series from its first year is the passing system. You can make tape-to-tape passes with your player in any position, angle, situation that are ridiculously accurate.
I shouldn't be able to use Robyn Regehr to make a perfect 2-line pass 95% of the time. Or a perfect pass to anyone, really.
Make a somewhat realistic passing system and all of a sudden I bet the game will resemble a real hockey game.

Do you still have pass assist on?
Turning it off helps a bit, but yes there are still too many perfect passes
Edit: And by too many perfect passes I meant coming from the computer, I miss plenty of passes with pass assist off.

Ya the hardcore passing mode should fix that right up. I can't make a tape to tape pass with almost anybody in that mode.

Does anyone use saucer pass? I think I can count on one hand the amount of times I use it.
I wouldn't mind if they got rid of that and used RB for 'accelerate' or 'top speed' or whatever they call it. I don't like the idea of clicking L3 to engage that, I feel like I will be clicking it by accident.

I play online only (specifically HUT)... my understanding is that you have to use their sliders?
But it's a good suggestion, I might be able to play some of the offline modes now.

I use it. I feel not enough people do. You can really set up good offensive chances by making use of it.

especially effective if you can master it for the cross creaser.
A little squeeze of the button produces a perfect cross-crease pass.
I also like it as the defender to send pucks into the corner.

Can someone explain to me the benefits of using the scouting report and how it works exactly?

Never use it. Same with the poke check (absolutely useless unless you execute it perfectly), push puck, fake shot, special dekes, spin-o-rama, dump puck (next to impossible to pull off the way you want to), lift stick, and protect puck.
I get along fine without using any of these features. They never work the way I want them to. Poke check is especially infuriating...I'll be in great position, sweep at the player in the exact same way the CPU does to me, and miss everytime. Even if I do get it to work, the CPU ALWAYS regains the puck (same with the lift stick).

Something else I never use. This is mostly attributed to the fact that scouting in this game is crap. 4 weeks scouting 12 prospects with a full Amateur Scout rating reveals approximately 1/3 of the attributes, and we never get to see potential. Drafting is more of a gamble than in reality, even with a top 5 pick.
I trade my picks for established players, or for already drafted prospects that have good attributes/potential.

I cannot emphasize enough how f'd I'd be without the bolded features. Stick lift is the lone feature that is probably a lot more trouble than it's worth. I end up high sticking people way more than I end up gaining control. However, when the puck is being cycled and your guys are a half step behind I find nothing levels the field like a well timed lift. It gives you that split second you need to get in the shooting/passing lanes.

Use it to scout locations for players, gives you some insight into their stats. lets you know where to draft them.

It is very possible that I am simply unskilled, but when I am on defense the only thing I can do is hope that my goalie stops it, I block the shot, or they turn it over. Again, I might just be no good, but I really feel that I have no effective tools for defensive play in this game.

Do you have to remember which players you scouted at the draft?

I'd say you're no good
I fond all of those features incredibly easy to use and incredibly effective when used at the right time.

Single or multi-player?

I'm surprised you're having so much difficulty with those features Yammer. Just like with saucer, I don't think people dump enough from what I've seen online. I do both the flip dump and slap dump in my versus and EASHL games and it has lead to generating great opportunities.

*Just a note, I never play online...so all of the play I reference is offline against the CPU.
Half of them I just never find use for (like the saucer, fake shot, push puck, and the fancy dekes), the others (like the poke check and dump puck) just don't seem to work well for me. For every 100 poke checks I do, 2 or 3 connect and knock the puck off the opposing player's stick. 99% of the time that happens they instantly regain the puck. Same goes for the stick lift. With dump puck, I find my players just bobble/dribble the puck and it rarely makes it past my own blueline. Every now and then it works like it should and I flip it up into the air and out and either start a cool break-out or clear the puck on a PK. Very rare.
