Holy crap, they're building water walls in front of the Safeway on 4th street and Elbow, trying to save it in case the river comes over the banks. And the bridge in Fish Creek is washed out by a river that is usually a small stream. Unreal.

Shouldn't the military be here helping out? Seriously, if we've declared a state of emergency wouldn't they be doing something?

Just out of curiosity, those values you are posting shoe, what would they look like as normal levels of water?
|
All questions regarding the water levels are in the links that have been posted numerous times.
http://www3.gov.ab.ca/env/water/basins/bas...m.cfm?basins=10
They even show a graph of actual water levels with the normal levels superimposed.

I was atching it on Global, and theu had some stills sent in from someone that was down there today. Apparently the dam above Bragg Creek burst, and Fish Creek turned into Fish Raging River. The bridge looked like it was totally washed out.

This is the bow ;
RBOWCALG 2005-06-18 19:00:00 3.139 780.00
RBOWCALG 2005-06-18 19:15:00 3.129 774.59
RBOWCALG 2005-06-18 19:30:00 3.117 768.11
RBOWCALG 2005-06-18 19:45:00 3.105 761.62
RBOWCALG 2005-06-18 20:00:00 3.082 749.19
The numbers at the right represent water level and the flow.
Water level on the bow was ;
RBOWCALG 2005-06-16 09:30:00 1.789 now it is 3.082
Basically the river doubled its height. From a small 200ft. wide river it became a 325 foot wide river. The banks are now full with a lot more water.
The flow
RBOWCALG 2005-06-16 09:30:00 219.64 now is 749.19
m3/s Cubic meters per second
Basically how much water is flowing past your eyes any given second.
Just about 4x the flow of two days ago. Away more than the flows since the river started rising weeks ago.
The rivers are cleaning themselves. But people like living near the water.
Pardon the math.
All sizing and mapping of the beautiful rivers that flow through Calgary are only of my appreciation and interpetation and can only result in serious problems if used in any unscroupulous endeavor to undermine my love of water.

I just got back on-line. Our basement is flooded just from ground water. Furniture is ok but all the flooring is gone and the drywall has apparently sucked up a bunch too. Keep checking calgary.ca for updates. It looks like the government will be the only recourse since insurance just doesn't cover most of the damage.

First flood related fatality last night: A bunch of idiots were standing on a vehicle bridge near Drumheller last night watching the river and forcing cars to slow down in a hurry to avoid hitting them. One semi driver couldnt, hit a car, plunged over the railing and was swept away.

On the bridge, two of the pedestrians were flown to hospital for treatment - a radio report this morning said one of them was a retired RCMP officer. His wife was the other person.
So, not your normal "idiots."
Secondly, its easy to blame those standing on the bridge but it would also be easy to observe the deceased truck driver might not have been paying enough attention and might have been gawking himself, leaving him to react in too little time.
We don't know the facts yet to blame it on the pedestrians alone.

Unless one of the people gawking jumped out into the middle of the lane then there should have been no reason for the truck driver to act as he did. It wouldn't surprise me one bit to find out that the driver wasn't paying enough attention to the road.
Also there was a report on the news yesterday about a teenaged girl who fell into the river, or that is what they think happened. I only caught the end of the story but it wouldn't surprise me one bit. Hell there were some people at the sev near where I live who were talking about rafting down the bow.... hell when the people who work at the seven 11 seem to be talking down to you and saying that is just a stupid idea it really should set something off.

Oh I have no doubt the driver was gawking. I went from Calgary to Edmonton to Smoky Lake to Drayton Valley to Leduc yesterday and gawked at every single bridge I crossed.
None the less, it was the people who created the situation by getting onto a bridge and making themselves a hazard to vehicles on the road.

Here we go again... Heavy rainfall warnings all over the Calgary area, with up to 50-80 mm of rain coming over the next day or so.
