The flip side of that is that this could very well be the year for us to grab a playoff spot, and we can't really afford to be patient with a guy trying to figure it out in the majors.

Patience is exactly what should be shown this season because this team is still away from being a World Series Contender. Listening to Farrell's comments on Cecil, i don't see the Jays giving him much of a leash.

Taking the day off (and making a 3 day weekend a 4 day weekend!) on Thursday to watch the season opener live, should be a rip roaring good time! After another crap Flames campaign I am really getting my hopes up for the Jays this season, hopefully they can have a good year and challenge for the playoffs.

Same here - got Thursday off (and Monday is a holiday here, monster weekend) and looking forward to the opener.
I don't expect much out of the Jays as far as actually contending but I always enjoy the games so much, especially with a team that has a lot of youth and a plan. Already planning this year's roadtrip to Seattle in July/August too.
Cecil today, man what can you say, it's a really bad spot - his stuff is declining badly at a young age and his control looks bad, he's like a terrible version of Ted Lilly. I am really happy if Drabek gets another shot as I think Vegas is a terrible place to send him but they really need a 5th arm that is better than Laffey.

Carreno will make one start and then the Jays will with a 4 man rotation till April 21.

Well that settles that I guess. Feel bad for Cecil, but he's just terrible right now. Have never seen Carreno, and I hope Drabek continues to show improvement over last year.

Carreno will be a bit of an adventure but this is the right move. Cecil hasn't shown he's anywhere close to being ready to face major league hitters.
Hopefully McGowan can come in once he's healthy and give the Jays some stability at the bottom of the rotation until some of the younger arms are ready.

Carreno was pretty good last year in the games I saw him pitch in relief. He did put up decent numbers in the games he pitched in the minors last year, and he probably figures to be a solid #5 or a #4 on an NL team.
Probably will slide into the pen after. The reason he was chosen and not say Hutchison or Jenkins was due to the fact that Carreno is already on the 40 man roster, and you'd have to DFA someone to make room.

Yikes, that's pretty disappointing from Cecil.

The thing that I am really excited about is that the Jays have a bunch of good young guys coming up soon, so if any of the pitchers start to suck (Drabek, Carreno), you have a laundry list of guys that are ready, or will be ready by say June/July. With depth like that, if you aren't performing (Cecil) you are going to be gone.

Ya, the key here is getting at least half a season out of McGowan so the other guys have a little more time to develop. I wouldn't be surprised to see AA add in an extra arm for the middle of the rotation at some point during the season either. I guess it all depends on how the likes of Drabek, Alvarez, Carreno, etc. pan out.
Rasmus is a big worry for me after a pretty abysmal spring training. He really has to pick it up in a hurry. I really hope he can have a decent start and get some confidence going.

On that note, don't the Jays have Rajai Davis to slot in at CF if Rasmus starts crapping the bed? Or is Davis still hurt?

I thought he was ok? The only ones I can think of that are hurt right now are McGowan and Litsch.

Davis was in spring training, and I haven't seen anything sayimg he is still injured from the end of last year.

I think with Rasmus that you have to give him at least two seasons to figure out his swing. The potential he showed in his first few years shows that he could be a good one.
I wish they'd have given the same courtesy to Snider, but I guess he'll have to wait.
