Schierholtz made a good one-hop throw to the plate. Posey dropped the ball before applying the tag. Simultaneously, Cousins smashed into Posey's chest. As Posey fell back, his left leg got caught underneath him.

SFGiants San Francisco Giants
#SFGiants purchase contracts of Brandon Crawford, Chris Stewart and recall Brandon Belt

AmyGGiants Amy Gutierrez
Unofficial update: #sfgiants Chris Stewart and Brandon Belt called up. Ford to D.L. Posey has broken leg and torn ligaments.

Buster Posey out for season?
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/...entry_id=89775

Many Giant fans were tweeting last night that Buster should have been playing at first base all along. Also, that he was ordered not to block the plate, but stand in front of it and sweep tag behind.

Will Cousins get a fastball to the head today?

Yeah, that was a gnarly collision. Posey has been a great story for the Giants since last year and it will be a shame if he misses the rest of the year.

I was in SF for the series against the A's last weekend. Posey took a foul tip to the head that rang his ears and the crowd was ready to jump off a bridge when he needed a few minutes to stop the ringing.

I was watching the game live from home last night and it was just shocking to see. Normally catchers just kind of shake those off, but when he was crawling around the ground you could tell how badly he was hurt. It reminded me of when Brady went down against the Chiefs a couple of years ago.

I hope he's alright, but I'm not optomistic. The Giants don't have a lot of catching depth. Whiteside is a good backup, but he doesn't have much of a bat. They are bringing Belt up for his bat, but where does he play? They already have a lot of OFs and Huff has shown he can't play well out there anymore. Huff has been struggling so I wouldn't mind seeing him on the bench for a little bit.

it was a clean play, but probably a smart move anyway.

I'm a huge Giants fan; losing Posey for the season is a crushing blow. I actually feel a little bit sick about this. MLB needs to do something to protect the catchers in these situations, I've never thought it made much sense for the runner to be able to crash indiscriminately into the man applying the tag just because it's at home plate. Try doing that as a runner going to first base (where the runner can also run through the base like home plate) and they'd be called out immediately.

SF got shut-out on a five-hitter by Sanchez. Hopefully Belt can add some offence and Sandoval will be back soon (about 2 weeks).

Giants should be ok with the great pitching and weak NL west division. They have also played far more road games than home games. I wonder if Posey could be back in September or October?

Update - some good news:

AmyGGiants Amy Gutierrez
Bochy says based on what he's been briefed on regarding Posey's MRI, he thinks Buster will be back this season

AmyGGiants Amy Gutierrez
Buster had 3 MRI's, ankle, lower leg & knee...knee is fine, fractured fibia & torn ligaments in ankle.

I disagree that it was clean. Posey was not blocking the plate and didn't have the ball. Cousins knew he was going to level Posey from the time he left third with the ball not being hit deep and Schierholtz having a great arm.

Buster never put his body in front of the plate, stayed above the third base line and went to tag him. It wasn't a true swipe tag but a semi-swipe. Cousins could have easily slid into the plate without obstruction, but chose to blow Posey up by going out of his way instead of heading to the plate.

I'm not saying it doesn't/shouldn't/hasn't happened many times in the past, but in this case there was no need and because of that, it was dirty.

The picture is SFW, but is huge.

Dude is going to get his head taken off next time he bats against san fran pitching. Too bad for mlb to lose a star player because of a AAA hack even if it was legal.

Is anyone going to be in San Francisco June 24-26? I'll be there from there 21-26 and have tickets to the games. I am looking for someone to go with for the weekend series versus Cleveland if anyone is interested. They are club seats in section 210 row C and I'm selling the single seat for $95 per game, which is my cost. PM me if interested.

Very sad news from Colorado.

Quote:
DENVER -- A 27-year-old man who fell about 20 feet and struck his head on concrete during the seventh inning of a Colorado Rockies game has been declared dead, authorities said Thursday.
Witnesses told police that the man had been trying to slide down a staircase railing at Coors Field and lost his balance during Tuesday afternoon's game between the Rockies and the Arizona Diamondbacks, Denver police spokesman Sonny Jackson said.

IFs can block the bases with their legs too, its just that their legs aren't impervious to cleats. Also when runners go to break up double plays at 2nd base they slide right through the base and can injure the 2B (ie, Lance Nix)

Didn't Nick Swisher break somebodies leg this season sliding into second?

Yup, Nishioka from Japan. I think it was his 3rd or 4th game in the majors. His manager told him that unlike in Japan, he can't dawdle on the base and must avoid hard slides. He found out the hard way.

Buster Posey's injury provokes anger, reflection

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/articl...SP6J1JLDD8.DTL

Was that a legal hit on Posey? Should the rules of baseball be changed? Would the Giants feel differently if their own aggression led to a game-winning run? Some of baseball's most fundamental tenets were at issue, but the consensus viewpoint hit the mark: It was a clean play, and you can't change a baseball ethic that has made sense for more than 100 years.

Yup, it's an unfortunate injury but the baseline belongs to the runner.
Trout you'll remember this one. 2003 Divisional Playoffs SF vs FLA. Top of the 9th the tying run JT Snow tries to score from 2nd on a single and goes crashing into Pudge Rodriguez. Pudge held the ball up for all to see and the Giants were eliminated. One of the most exciting endings to a series.

I took a break from the Giants during the Bonds era.

On the Posey injury, the baseline was open for Cousins to slide. He chose to go out of his way and barrel into Posey with his shoulder, in front of the plate.
