Hahaha...so you're far enough away that the sound is out of sync with the playing, and you have no idea if buddy is in standard tuning or not, nor how much delay or anything else he's playing with, and you're able to deduce all of this eh.
Sounds like you're quite a bit more than an intermediate guitar player.

Everyone that I heard around me were saying who the f is Metric. (with most people being 25-30ish).
And after the performance people were asking why the f did that terrible band play.
I had never heard of either band before today and based on their performance today will not want to listen to them again.
If it is your cup of tea fair enough but it is understandable why many people would wonder what they were doing there based on their performance today and the fact that many people had no idea who they were.

I don't think most of us are even big Metric fans, your posts are just so absurd it's too compelling not to respond.

Not really my cup of tea, I think they're ok. Not expecting everyone to like them, just thought more people knew of them. They're quite successful for a Canadian band, and have been around for almost a decade now.
I'm 26, and can't say I know a single person around my age who wouldn't know who they are.

As an advanced guitar player, I can tell you that most serious musician understand the realities of live music, and know the majority of live shows (typically the bigger bands) use some form of pre-recorded music at all their shows.
Unfortunately, people will complain if they air guitar... but, they will also complain if they grit through the elements and sound like crap. lose-lose

Thank you. At least someone acknowledges the fact that it is highly likely a huge element of that performance was not "real". I am not an advanced player by any stretch, but for people to be believing that any guitar player could honestly play in that weather is just silly.

For the record, the songs Metric played were all in EADGBE tuning. They also were mostly power chords, with the exception of the chorus for Stadium Love.

Brutal. I guess I can accept that Calgary Flame fans don't really know who Metric is. And I acknowledge that it was a poor performance from a band that could have delivered much better. But you have far too much prejudice to what you call 'indie or garage-band's' to deduce a band would lip synch an off performance (Emily definitely decided to pre-record her pitchiness in the comfort of a warm studio ahead of time). Also, the giant heaters beside the guitarist, bassist and drummer were a wonderful ploy to try and fool you as well. Thank goodness your skills of investigative musical criticism has been put to good use on the CalgaryPuck forums to discriminate against bands that represent something that you just simply can't understand.
I said it before, and even though it WAS a poor performance, I'll still say it again - I give major kudos to the programmers for booking bands that represent Canadian music that aren't in the vain of Nickelback influenced bs. Clearly, this is an area of the country that needs this sort of help.

Also, everyone out there today suffered in some way from the cold. Except maybe Kipper/Bourque and Tanguay. From the commentators to the players to the performers.

I didn't even think it was that bad of a perfomance really. Maybe it could have been better, but it wasn't terrible. The first minute seemed shakey, but I thought they picked it up as it went on and they got comfortable.

To be honest, being part of a Canadian band myself, and knowing what the scene is like the performance by Metric was disheartening to say the least. But I honestly think their really wouldn't have been a great band from Canada for this event unless you go to the staples i.e. the Hip, the Guess Who, Blue Rodeo, Bryan Adams, etc. And even then, those are acts that are losing the teeth that they once had. I think the biggest success would have been luring Alexis on Fire to play whom I am personally not a fan of at all. There just seems to be a lacking drive in Canadian music and music in general today. I feel it's a lot more about the spectacle and drama than the music now and the short cuts that are taken to help improve the sound of bands and performers has ultimately hurt live performances IMO. The Super Bowl is the crowing achievement of this fact. Where are the days where bands hooked up their pedals, plugged into their amps and truly rocked a stadium away??

I would have loved to have seen how the Metric would have handled Woodstock 69.

Metric was weak sauce.
Paul Brandt would have been better. Heck Nickelback could have at least got the stadium moving. Play Rockstar and Burn it to the ground. Just something to kick it into hgih gear you know.

Don't think many would have minded seeing Emily Haines in the mud/rain I'm a musician as well (sig below and just recently solo) so as musicians we probably recognize how tough of a show that would have been to nail. It's more the overdramatic, cynical, irrational stereotype to music that's not Cjay approved that I find more disturbing than Metric's performance.

Caved in and ended up going to the game....I would say this was the only part of the "entertainment" that could have been better. Metric was much better than Tokyo Police club so good that they didn't lead off but both bands seemed out of their league for some reason. It just didn't work very well and seemed rushed and thrown together...likely because the limited time and Tokyo Police Club also seemed to come on stage when the intermission was almost half over....only dissapointment on the day though....Calgary rocked!!
