Exactly. If you turn your store in Westbrook mall into a Nazi propaganda store don’t be surprised when the landlord shuts you down and don’t be surprised as a customer when it’s not there for long.

They DO have to be somewhat careful, as while they are protected by Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act they are also bound by it.

Patience? Social media companies loved having Trump on their platforms and have significantly profited from steering people towards whackos spewing garbage and lies. It's just that it has now become politically untenable to keep Trump + Qanon stuff on there. So on the eve of the Democrats holding the legislative and executive branches of the government, those companies made a PR move by banning that stuff in the hopes that they'll escape the fallout from their significant role in fostering the insanity.

I imagine he's pretty enraged over this, and it makes me smile. If we're lucky he'll just stay out of sight over these last 10 days and we'll never hear from the orange s*** stain ever again after the 20th.

Trump routinely boasted of the social media bullhorn he possessed. He credited it with launching his political trajectory. And he used it as a tool to lacerate his foes. On Friday night, he lost it. And, then, he lost his mind.
The president is “ballistic,” a senior administration official said after Twitter permanently took down his account, citing the possibility that it would be used in the final 12 days of Trump’s presidency to incite violence. The official said Trump was “scrambling to figure out what his options are.

Quote:
Through it all, he’s been uncharacteristically quiet — banished temporarily at first from the main social media platforms but also unwilling to go out and speak before the press. The only times the public saw him were through awkwardly-edited White House produced-videos. In one, he urged for the rioting to end while clinging to the fiction that the election had been stolen from him. In another, he conceded he would not serve a second consecutive term.
There are no plans to immediately emerge from the cocoon either. One White House official said there were initial internal discussions between White House aides and Trump of doing a “last farewell interview.” But, the official added, “I’m not sure if they’re going to come to fruition,” much to the official’s chagrin

Sure, except that the basic definition of the restriction to 1st amendment protections can be found with a 2 second search and the most basic resources ever: Encyclopedia Britannica.
Quote:
Second, a few narrow categories of speech are not protected from government restrictions. The main such categories are incitement, defamation, fraud, obscenity, child pornography, fighting words, and threats. As the Supreme Court held in Brandenburg v. Ohio (1969), the government may forbid “incitement”—speech “directed at inciting or producing imminent lawless action” and “likely to incite or produce such action” (such as a speech to a mob urging it to attack a nearby building). But speech urging action at some unspecified future time may not be forbidden.
|
It's clear to me that the bolded applies and Twitter is 100% acting constitutionally as the law and amendment has been interpreted.
Free speech is not universal and never has been, and only a mouth breather without a decent education would think that it is.
Seriously...can we get mandatory civics lessons in public schools again?

This is a huge win for society and I don’t see the risks the way you do I guess.
|
I agree that today’s actions are a win for our society.
I think your argument that people could just build their own cell phone operating systems, and App Store and nothing is stopping them illustrates the problem. It’s no longer possible due to barriers to entry to create a new cell phone operating system in this round of technology.
I hope the anger from the right is used to break up tech companies. They shouldn’t be selling the hardware, the software, the apps, a payment system, and more. It makes it to easy to prevent meaningful competition.

I’m kind of loving the reactions from Trump supporters to be honest. The couple here and the scores of them elsewhere. People are out there fighting in North America and the world for the right to be treated equally, against excessive force, the right to give blood or adopt or marry, and countless other legitimate things. And a bunch of privileged little losers are sitting around saying “they’ll come for you!” and whining because they can’t freely incite insurrection, call for the killing and violence of individuals, and spread white supremacy. “My freedumbs!”
Please, let them come for me. When I side with nazis, when I call for violence and death against countless innocent people, please, let them come for me. If I ever become as ignorant, hateful, and pathetic as Trump and the many supporters who engage in this nonsense, let them come.
Oh, what’s that? “Coming for me” means I can’t post on Twitter? My god. It’s worse than I could have possibly imagined. What ever will I do?

Amazon suspends Parler, threatening to take pro-Trump site offline indefinitely
Quote:
Amazon suspended the pro-Trump social-networking site Parler from its web-hosting service this weekend, a move that threatens to darken the site indefinitely after its users glorified the recent riot at the U.S. Capitol.
The e-commerce and web hosting giant said Parler had violated its terms of service given its inadequate content-moderation practices, adding in a letter to the social network that it would implement its punishment just before midnight Pacific time Monday.

In a letter to Parler on Saturday, Amazon said that it had sent the company 98 examples of posts on its site that encouraged violence and that many remained active. “It’s clear that Parler does not have an effective process to comply with” Amazon’s rules, the company said in the letter. Amazon “provides technology and services to customers across the political spectrum, and we continue to respect Parler’s right to determine for itself what content it will allow on its site. However, we cannot provide services to a customer that is unable to effectively identify and remove content that encourages or incites violence against others.”
On Friday, Apple gave Parler 24 hours to clean up its app or face removal from its App Store. Parler appeared to take down some posts over that period, but on Saturday, Apple told the company its measures were inadequate. “We have always supported diverse points of view being represented on the App Store, but there is no place on our platform for threats of violence and illegal activity,” Apple said in a statement.
“This is very huge,” Amy Peikoff, Parler’s policy chief, told Fox News after Apple gave its warning on Friday. Without access to the App Store, she said, “we’re toast.”

I, for one, am shocked that removing terrorists and terrorist organizations from popular social media platforms makes it harder for those organizations to organize and recruit.
Let’s not applaud Facebook, Twitter and Amazon just yet. They’ve been profiting off this and complicit in this for years. It literally took an attempted insurrection to get them to budge. Even then, it likely came down to a financial decision based on risk and reputation. This was not a moral decision for the good of the nation and civil discourse.
