It seems like there is always one or two of these guys around. Heck, the Flames have released guys like that in the past. It's no different than drafting really. The more darts you have to throw, the better.

After all, if there's one thing the Flames need it's another left shot winger.

Played well with Huberdeau in Florida.

IIRC, they were primary line mates during Hub's 115 point season.

Defense
Code:
Player Age Term Money Comment
Tanev 35 1 $6.0-7.0M 1 year overpay, flip to a contender
Kylington 27 1-2 $2.5-3.0M Similar to his previous number
Brodie 34 2-3 $2.8-4.0M Decent stop gap in the top 4, really fell off towards the end of the year
Martinez 37 1 $1.5-2.0M Good vet from a winning team, to help develop the prospects
Dillon 34 2-3 $3.0-4.0M Another solid option as a 4/5D
Dumba 30 1 $3.0-4.5M That's going to be a mistake, but very Flames like
Giordano 41 1 day N/A Retire a Flame, join the management or the coaching staff
Forwards
Code:
Player Age Term Money Comment
Duclair 29 2-4 $4.0-5.5M Last ditch effort to get Huberdeau going
Duchene 33 1-3 $6.5-7.5M A good skilled RW/C to play with Huberdeau
Monahan 30 1 $6.5-7.0M Another center that might develop chemistry with Huberdeau
Henrique 34 1-2 $4.0-5.5M Defensive center to take some of the load off Backlund
The Flames aren't going to sign any big names on July 1st, and would do the majority of their shopping once things settle. I could see the Flames offering a 1 year overpay to multiple players if they can't get a good long term deal signed elsewhere. Likely, the Flames will try to stick to the 1-3 year term for signings, so they can limit their risk.
PS: Arvidsson is a guy I would love to play for the Flames, but I don't see it happening.

As Eric Duhatschek has said, GMs get sucked in by putting too much importance on playoff performance - case in point, James Neal.

Brouwer too. He had just come off of a long playoff run with the Blues and had played out of his mind.

I dont mean to do this with debrusk, I mean with any UFA'S that they an do it with. Offer 1 year max money to Stamkos, or Reinhart, or big contract to guys like mantha or olofson. Guys like that.

Outside of maybe Duclair I have zero interest in any of the suggested free agents listed in the OP

I think they will target a veteran defenceman just to stabilize the bottom 2 pairs and improve depth for when Ras gets traded. Probably a similar signing to bring in a middle 6 forward for depth and stability.
I like the idea of signing Gio to a one day contract and let him retire as a Flame. That would be a nice storyline for the City and franchise.
Just no big splash or long term commitment please.

Do we really need a winger? If they bring anyone in they got to send someone out imo.
2nd pairing defender is a lot more appealing. Even over pay for shorter term

Bargain bin only. Prioritizing good locker room guy, either flip at the deadline or a younger diamond in the rough.

Personally I would keep the cap space open to inherit bad short term contracts from other teams and buy draft picks.

Pass on the free agency market and have a floor cap space to load up for trade deadline deals picks. Do what Habs did and leave room for desperate teams to make the deal, exactly what butteryfly posted.

It seems rare that a team will sign absolutely zero free agents though. I would be surprised if the Flames don’t sign anyone. I’m not expecting anything big though.

They'll sign some AHL/NHL tweeners for sure. Wranglers are likely to have some veteran turnover.
