Hunter Brzustewicz discussion (or Poirier -- you decide)
Few days old, but not much else in the way of prospect news...

I think Poirier is the darkhorse. Bru will need a year in the AHL for some seasoning against men.

Thanks for posting, that's really encouraging. Will be fascinating to re-evaluate that Lindholm trade in 3-5 years once all the prospects and trade trees are fully matured. Looking forward to seeing this kid at Young Stars in the Fall!

From what I've seen of Poirier with the Wranglers, all he would contribute to the Flames next year is helping them get a lottery pick.

8sPOT is right. Poirier needs to improve defensively to be a positive addition to the Flames.

Horrible gap control at the moment and consistently loses attackers. Ceiling is super high but it's going to take a few seasons until his defensive game is up to par.

That's good to know. I saw the other day he was an OHL 2nd team all-star and was pretty surprised looking at his offensive stats. Had to assume at that point he has some lapses in his defensive game.

I loved Bru in his draft year, and I love him now. Very excited about picking him up, he’s going to be a top-pairing D.

Im kind of confused here...are you talking about Poirier?
If so....yeah he needs a LOT of work before ever being considered an NHL level defender. He has already made some progress from his junior days and his offence is really good, but since his draft day, this was always a red flag with him.

I've read nothing but praise from coaches and scouts on Hunter B and his all around game. His Dzone play needs to come further, but everyone at his stage has holes. At worst he feels like a Brodie and at best he's probably in the number 1 conversation on many teams.

I'm talking about Poirier. Who was playing all situations and tonnes of 5v5 on one of the best teams in the AHL Two years ago.
I find the comments on his defensive play being poor rather suspect. I watched him play. He looked fine to me. He's not Chris Tanev.
He was also the second highest scoring rookie Dman in the AHL that year outscoring far higher drafter prospects. And 3rd highest at 5v5.
My guess is he would have been even more dominant this year had he not been injured. And is still under 23.

As a big London Knights fan I have seen a lot of Hunter and he projects as a top pairing D man to me. His hockey IQ is unreal. I think this is going to be looked at down the road as a huge mistake by Vancouver letting this kid go.

That’d be amazing! He is the top D that we brought in through the the trades in my mind easily. I’m now just hoping that Grunishkov turns into a Tanev/Vlasic type and Bahl a more defensive (and perhaps less offensive) Zadorov.
Guys like Jurmo, Okhotiuk I don’t expect anything from. Miromanov I’m a less less high on than the coaching staff.
In our own guys, I think the year lost for Poirier pretty much took away his impact NHL chances. Kuznetsov and Soloyvov are nothing more than no6’s at best. I just hope Etienne Morin develops into a 2nd pairing staple.
I wouldn’t be shy to take a dmen at 9 if one of the top dmen fall to 9 even though I’m still not a Parekh fan (Yakemchuk excluded).
Lev, Silayev, Buium, Dickinson are no brainers.
