It's kind of funny that the cap would finally jump this much when the Flames already have a lof of cap space, don't need it, and are possibly looking to use it to gain some assets.

Teams are still gonna be tight to the cap

True.

We probably won't see half the league over the cap again. But cap space is still plenty tight.

I wonder if Montreal would pay to move Josh Anderson. There's a player I wouldn't mind seeing here

Maybe we can grab the first back from the Monahan trade so we don't worry the entire year on the condition of the Flames landing in the 11-15 spot.

2) Hope that player has a resurgence BUT also gets injured again and misses most of the season
3) Leverage injury history and performance to sign him as a pending UFA to a hugely discounted contract for 1-year.
4) Have him have an actual resurgence and not get injured.
5) Use his ridiculously low cap hit to garner a higher return at the deadline.

Conroy, there's your playbook, get on it!
They only need to do #1, which is the way to use cap space when you don’t have a competitive team. #2-5 is just luck.

Alan Walsh is whining about the cap again.

Maybe he needs to learn math. Comparing the NHL and NBA is ridiculous. One has a massive TV deal and 15 player roster.

That’s his point though.

Other leagues have seen more rapid growth in revenue compared to the NHL, NBA TV deal grew at a much larger % than the NHL deal.

Bettman and the NHL owners do a horrible job of marketing and growing the sport IMO.

The rest of his whining about there even being a cap is annoying, but he’s right about the NHL being bad at growing the game.

Walsh likes to pretend the NHL is in the same stratosphere as the NFL/NBA. He talks about the cap being higher in the NHL in 2012 but wasn’t that when escrow was at an all time high and the owners still got more than 50% HRR and a lockout occurred the following season.

Who would have thought taking a violent hard hitting sport and turning it into a dive fest and PP marathons would hurt viewship / fail to grow your TV numbers

PPs are the boringest part of a game unless in small quantities . Increasing scoring through more PPs doesn’t increase the flow or excitement in the game . It’s actually lessons the drama

The NHL just signed a big US deal after Covid. Prior to that due to poor ratings they had that NBC deal.

They also signed that huge deal with Rogers in 2014. The NBA spiked in 2016 with a huge deal, and their contract has come up at the right time after covid.

The NHL was negotiating after covid. So unless they could predict a pandemic would change things, not sure what else they can do.

The NHL players also wanted ffull pay for a 56 game season with no fans.

It's a lot easier to market your sport when nearly 100% of the population can play it and grew up with it compared to what 5% or less. NHL actually does a good job in the US IMO. In Canada we are just taken for granted and run by fanboys of the 80s Oilers.

Its always surprising that people miss this bit.

Basketball: A Ball and something to throw it in to.
Football: A football and someone else to catch it.
Baseball: Glove, ball, bat and someone else to throw or catch.
Soccer: Anything remotely round, although a ball is preferred, and some things designating a goal.

Hockey: Ice. Skates. Stick. Equipment. Etc.

Unless you live in a cold enough climate to have outdoor rinks, a community hockey arena is a huge expense versus basketball hoops in a park. And kids don't even like outdoor rinks now anyway. Don't blame them.

Salaries will escalate though too which will result in guys we are trading being a better bang for your buck this year.

Rasmus Anderson at $4.55 mil when you have guys like Hanifin making $7.35. Similar players
