Really, his biggest mistake was to hit a bus full of hockey players in Canada. He won't be in as much scrutiny if he, per se, hit a bus full of foreign tourists.
The guy is harmless, and I think he will be a good asset to society for Canada if he can stay and be put in some sort of a safe-driving spokesman and industry educator...

Yeah, he had 70 violations in 11 days. I have a lot of questions about that, like how much of a role the company and industry as a whole played into that. I am sure it is complicated (or maybe not, I don't know).

For a new driver to have that many violations, the employer and the industry are a major part of the problem.
I don't see any benefit to deporting him.

Pre Humboldt the province didn't do the testing for class 1 licensing, this was mostly because immigrants who wanted to drive a truck cited language barriers in trying to get licensed, problem is a lot of driving schools popped up and didn't give proper training and in some cases very little training at all, most would have someone train on an automatic tractor but let them figure it out when they got behind an 18 speed and more than one of these "schools" were shut down for basically just selling a class 1.
I believe Alberta and Saskatchewan now do the final testing but the rest of Canada is still the same.
My old neighbor is a DOT officer and claims 50% of truck drivers wouldn't pass a real test and he would like a graduated license approach.
Something like this:
year 1 - Class 3 up to 5 tonnes
year 2 or after 20k logged - Class 1 single trailer
year 3 or after 100k logged - Class 1 combo (super B)
year 4 or after 200k logged- Class 1 LCV (2 full trailers)
I also don't see the point in deporting him, but please don't let him drive a heavy truck again.

In that scenario he would have been deported without anyone hearing about it.

My thought process as well. His company is culpable, and wouldn't surprise me if there was some thinly veiled pressure to falsify records. Plus, we all know every driver did it before e-logs.

Update: he's been ordered to be deported.
Quote:
The truck driver who caused the horrific bus crash involving the Humboldt Broncos junior hockey team has been ordered to be deported.
The decision came this morning at an Immigration and Refugee Board hearing in Calgary for Jaskirat Singh Sidhu.
Sidhu's lawyer Michael Greene has said the decision was a foregone conclusion, as all that's required to deport Sidhu is proof that he's not a Canadian citizen and he committed a serious crime.
Sidhu is from India and has permanent resident status in Canada.
He was granted parole after being sentenced to eight years for dangerous driving in the 2018 bus crash in Saskatchewan that killed 16 people and injured 13 others.
Sidhu's lawyer has said there are still numerous other legal procedures to come, and the deportation process could take months or years.

I don't know how I feel about him getting deported and people who bring their secular violence BS to Canada are allowed to stay.
Doesn't really seem right to me.

So assuming it takes a year or more to deport him
It will have been 7 + years since the tragedy
Seems pointless to deport a clearly nonviolent “criminal” with no risk to repeat

What does deporting him accomplish?
Our justice system is a joke.
Maybe they can release a sex offender the day they deport him and let the public know he is at a high risk to reoffend.

Hopefully he will be granted an exception after multiple appeals so that he can stay. I think he will make a good spokesperson for trucking safety for Canada.
As I said years ago, I think the court decisions were affected because it was a hockey-related incident, and the media blew it up to make it a high visibility case...

So we're deporting people at fault for tragic accidents but not rapists and murderors?
Seems... backwards

While he may not be an threat to re-offend (I 100% believe it was a tragic mistake with horrible consequences), there are rules you must abide by when you are a PR, so this isn't really anything out of the ordinary. PR's have to be on their best behavior until they gain citizenship. I don't think it accomplishes much deporting him in terms of keeping the country safe, but those are the rules IRCC has laid out and it's been that way for years.

What’s the point of deporting a man who has shown remorse whose wife and son are citizens?

I'm not hell bent on deporting the man but it's part of the law and I suspect the family's of the victims probably would welcome it.

One father was interviewed on the radio and said it would give his family a little more closure.
