I've read on another forum that they're often grounded for repairs resulting in cancelled flights.

They are an absolute operational disaster and the only reason WestJet allowed it to continue this long is because Encore is desperately short of pilots.

Lethbridge goes from a peak of 3 Saab flights down to just a single Encore flight. So... yes.

Who would have thought paying 40% less than the competition plus telling your pilots it'll be over a decade to progress to mainline WJ, while then hiring less experienced pilots above you, would lead to a shortage!

They're old and well-used, and they show it. There's no doubt about that.

I just have a soft spot for them

The frustrating thing about the Canadian aviation landscape is that we need 50 seat planes.

We have a large landmass, sparce population, and a need to travel for business & leisure.

The markets of 100,000-200,000 people need service but a 76+ seat aircraft is too big for frequency.

Looking at my home, we used to have 4-6 daily flights from Sydney to Halifax. Currently there are 0. One flight a day to Montreal and one to Toronto.

The Montreal flight is too late for any connection west of Ontario (4:30pm).

The Toronto flight leaves at 5am.

There's no inbetween.

What's a small city to do? There are no small commuter planes anymore.

Nothing to replaces the Saab's or Dash 8's.

Really makes me wish they did a nextgen update for the Q200 or Q300, although who knows how popular they'd be. There's always the ATR-42

Seeing on twitter right now that Canada will host the 2025 G7 meeting in Kananaskis again.

It's gonna be some avgeek goodness with all the arrivals into YYC.

My sister was looking at a flight from Halifax to St John's and there were connections in Hamilton and Ottawa. Crazy.

Not to mention the airspace restrictions messing with all the westbound departures and arrivals. Last time it even affected Cranbrook's instrument approach IIRC.

2002 was pretty fresh post 9/11, I wonder if it will be as restrictive as then? We were flying out of YYC at the one flight school, and we could only go east, you didn't dare go west...

This needs the old 2&7 Hello Calgary theme song playing at the same time.

(and yes I am aware this song was used in many cities, my memories were dashed long ago when I discovered this)

Such a damn cool plane!

My dream (as far-fetched as it is) is to see an F-117A Nighthawk somehow fly around / land in Calgary. I think I would die the happiest man ever if that happened.

Don't make me choose!

Of course the SR-71 may have coolest "Pilot story" of them all out there. Just look up the fabled "ground speed check" story.

Ah heck, I'll link it for everyone: https://www.thesr71blackbird.com/Air...ed-check-story

If that was recorded it would have been one for the history books. Amazing!

I posted this in the thread for the cup finals but thought I would ask the plane gurus here. It looks like the charter A320 for the Oilers (AC Jetz) had to do a fuel stop in Kansas City, Missouri enroute back to Edmonton.

This also happened last week when they arrived into Edmonton but the logic was that due to poor weather, they were not able to carry enough fuel for the non stop trip to Edmonton.

Given the approx range of an A320 being 6000+ km's and the distance between Florida and Edmonton approx 4000 km's, why the need to stop? Can a A320 really not make it non stop carrying 40-45 people plus gear?

https://www.flightaware.com/live/flight/ACA7040

Thanks!
