I mean yeah, people ask for pictures or clarification and you provide it. Then they lowball and you politely give a decline just so they don't keep messaging.

I'd love to build a time machine and go back in time and beat the ever living #### out of them so they can't use the service the first place I guess.

Isn’t it surreal when you find the item that was stolen from you, posted later the same day on Kijiji?

It’s a fairly uncommon Garmin car GPS, and the odds of it being a coincidence seems unlikely. I was going to replace it anyway but can I have some fun here?

If you're quick about it. You may be able to convince the police to have an officer accompany you, but not likely with the low value. Their resources are very strained these days.

Ah… I guess I should have approached it more sneakily. Unfortunately after asking for the serial number the guy on Kijiji went incognito and took down all of their info. Anyway, if anyone sees a Garmin Nuvi 3597 for sale with serial number 2WS061871, it’s mine.

Oh wormius, that's how you approached it, by saying you had yours stolen and asking for the serial number? Rookie move, dude. Absolute rookie move.

Did you think he was going to be like "ah yeah, you know what I stole this, just come grab it from me"? Darn, you had it set up perfectly with it appearing on kijiji.

Dammit. You’re right. I should have just offered to buy it, checked the SN, and then taken off if it was mine.

He seemed to have his address in the original Kijiji ad, but I don’t want to turn this into Mission Impossible, and I don’t think its worth involving police.

Theres the story about a girl who had her bike stolen from a local park, saw it pop on kijiji the next day. Arranged to meet them at the local mcdonalds saying she'd like to buy it and had been looking for one just like that.
Showed up, confirmed it was hers after looking at it, asked to take it for a test ride. And then just rode it away.

You can put any address you want in kijiji so if he was the one who stole it he probably just used a fake address

Saw a new one today.. I've always wondered why random people from India or China or Iran message me on Facebook, I assume it's for the "mail it to me oh I sent you too much" scam, but I'm selling a car...

One guy's profile says he's in Iran or somesuch (I mean can't you at least put in minimal effort to make the scam seem legit?!), but he's doing a really good job of sounding like a real customer, quite impressive actually.

Then he asks me to get a car history report at some website I've never heard of. Searches say it's a phishing site so they just get your credit card info when you try and buy their report.

Now he's saying he doesn't trust CARFAX and he'll pay me back if he doesn't buy the car lol.

No wonder people just trade in their cars.

What car are you selling? I will offer you 20% of what you are asking for it and then be indignant when you either decline the offer or ignore my offer.

Am I being too paranoid by asking people to meet up somewhere other than my home to see the car the first time?

Some people seem to jump pretty fast to "Address and phone #?".. One guy had what looks like a pretty robust Facebook profile and history basically stopped talking to me when I said I wanted to meet at a store parking lot first time. Another guy wanted my address as he wants to come look at it, his profile is basically empty to me, I told him we could meet up at a nearby store and he might have gone silent too.

Man no wonder people trade in their cars.

You are not being paranoid at all in my view. It is not uncommon for files in my practice to originate from online seller scenarios. And as noted, using a CPS parking lot - especially if the item has a higher value - is a great way to filter out most people who might be looking to scam / steal from / hurt you.

I once bought a car in Marlborough mall parking lot.

Turned out to be stolen. That was 20 years ago and I will never make that mistake again.

I think people are just more cautious these days.

I do all of my Kijiji transactions at Truck-Stops around midnight.

It keeps the crime down.

I'm an honest and genuine guy, but if I'm proposing a transaction at a truck-stop at midnight? It'll keep the other guy guessing.
