I'm just glad there was video, because that will help in the learning from the whole tragedy.

Are we sure it wasn't the christofascists seeking to seize the country?

I do wonder why there are not concrete 'diverters' in front of the legs to take the brunt and divert the ship before it hits the support.

to be clear boats hit bridges all the time, even big boats, the surprise here is that the bridge fell down from something it aught to be able to survive

Here's a really good thread on the bridge collapse.

Did cargo ships that big even exist when that bridge was built? It looks so flimsy that it's not shocking it could be taken down by 100,000 tons.

I saw something earlier (maybe even here) that the average cargo ship when the bridge was built was 300 ft long... The one that struck the bridge was over 900 ft.

I've seen a few tweets from people claiming to be engineers saying there is simply no way to engineer a bridge to withstand that. No idea if it is true or how many are actually engineers.

Are you an engineer? You can't just say that without having any knowledge on the subject.

Are bridges built to withstand 100,000 tons hitting it head on? Highly doubt that.

I understand that visually it looks weird when structures like this collapse. Everything looks like it’s made of twigs. The reality is, each component is a humongous piece of steel… supporting more humongous pieces of steel…. Spanning a river…. Meaning they aren’t just holding things up from underneath, but laterally as well. Extreme forces at play here while it’s at rest. And all of it is supporting a giant slab of concrete. Any catastrophic damage to a component is going to cascade through the rest.

Actually, that video looked pretty much exactly like I'd expect a bridge collapse to look.

I didn’t see a thread, probably because I don’t have Twitter? So I went to his post page to find it; found some of the absolute stupidest #### imaginable and closed it. Any direct links to this supposed good take? I’m not interested on how he wants some volunteers to take over Haiti.

Uh, no, nothing of value in that thread.
