With the whole 1st round draft pick situation next year, I really hope they take next season to retool more. No big free agent signings just to be in the mushy middle. Weaponize the cap space to get futures, and maybe sign a player or two to one-year deals that can be sold at the deadline.
i know it's hard to be patient, but trying to rush things rarely works.

Sign a veteran goalie to tutor Wolf
Sign a RD (overpay Tanev if possible)
Sign a depth centreman
Thats it

Highly unlikely

He played all his junior as a C so he can play the middle.

How do you suggest they do any of that if they turn off communication channels?

They suggested listen to offers and see if there is an overpay. Flames would be foolish not to listen.

Yeah, I think he pretty much has been worth that contract save for the first ~30 games of last year.

I think they should definitely be looking at 35 year old + players who still put in a full season and are willing to take a 1-2 year deal. If for no other reason, to tie their own hands a bit on the cap space, and make sure they will have some available in 2 years, and as a roll of the dice that the guy can contribute to the team or be flipped for assets at the deadline.
Quick look at the UFA list, there are a
JVR, Shattenkrik, Paciroetty, Kane, Perron, Okposo, Jack Johnson, Wheeler, Pavelski, Goligoski.
Some of these guys might retire, and some might not entertain playing for a non-competitive team. But I think it would be good use of assets to look at having a little extra higher end talent / depth in the roster (even in guys who have lost a step), and a possible trade chip, if one of them is just looking for one last paycheque.

As much as I like Markstrom, he will cost us Draft positions in the next two years and should be traded this offseason for prospects and picks
Even if Wolf Does not work out, we need a struggling team in the near future to get better. Have another 3 years of Just missing or just making the playoffs does not work IMO.

Reinhart on a big contract is the last thing the Flames need. Playing center in junior doesn’t mean much in the NHL. He didn’t play much center in Buffalo either.

Taking a while to get to 5000

Bail out cap strapped teams, take on pics for their high/underperforming/overaged contracts, and bury what you can in the minors.

Frank Seravalli, who despite being shat on here (a lot by me) has been pretty darn accurate when it comes to Flames news / forecasting doesn't think Markstrom will be back next season.
I'm going to stop piling on him and just accept that he knows. Which in this case would be a good thing.

What hurt the team in losing players should help them in avoiding mistakes to some degree; I don't see a big lineup of the guys signing for term and dollars picking Calgary.
Hopefully that means they find some of those musical chair guys that sign one year show me deals.
Biggest threat is another Kadri contract ... good player too much term and over played his hand with his preferred destination but signs a high value deal here.

At some point though if you don’t start spreading out picks you’re going to generate another problem. A bunch of young guys with no where to go.
Getting more picks isn’t the answer to every problem

Francis said on 960 a few days ago that he doesn't feel Markstrom will be back so it's probably a safe assumption that he's going to be moved likely at the draft.

I don't think there is much doubt Markstrom will be gone after this season.

Scoring Winger

Be interesting on Marky. $2500000 signing bonus with salary only $3.5mm for next season. Teams may want Calgary to pay it first then negotiate. So not on draft day. Hmm

Trade future considerations for NJ first.
Then Holtz and casey for 50% markstrom the day after the bonus is paid
Haha, but maybe...

It’s always the answer. If you have too many picks in a draft then some team doesn’t have enough. They’ll be happy to trade you picks in a future year for ones in the current year.
Wasn’t that long ago that the draft was 13 rounds or something.

It seems to have worked for Carolina
2023 - 10 picks, 113 points made it to Round 3
2022 - 7 picks, 116 points, made it to Round 2
2021 - 13 picks, 117 point pace (shortened season) made it to round 2
2020 - 8 picks, 98 point pace, Round 1
2019 - 12 picks, made it to Round 3
2018 - 6 picks, 83 points
2017 - 8 picks, 87 points
2016 - 9 picks, 86 points
2015 - 9 picks, 71 points.
I hope they follow the Hurricane mode in terms of accumulating picks.
