There's been talk of the expos returning. Maybe this is the cheapest way to bring em back. Or at least a staged process to get the Big O modernized. I love that stadium. I fell in love with the expos and watched many games there as a kid in the 80s.
Yeah it needs love but if done correctly, it can become iconic

Not yet, but as with most things in Montreal for any infrastructure or public buildings, cost overruns early in the project will force the province to claim there's no more money and the Feds will have to step in, and then we will be paying for it. It's not even really a secret, it's just the way Quebec rolls as a "have not" province.
But yes, that money would be better utilized as part of a new baseball and or football venue downtown. Who is going to use it? Saputo has his own stadium, as do the Als, though anyone criticizing McMahon needs to step foot in that decrepit McGill stadium (though as an out of province person, you have to pay more now).

I know there's a lot of infrastructure around there including the Olympic diving & swimming pools, biodome, metro, etc. but seriously $2 billion in demo costs? Who provided that estimate, the Rizzuto Family?

I think it has to do with the metro line running under it, and whatever utilities are there.
They can't simply just implode the place.
Mind you I'm no engineer, it's entirely possible the estimate was indeed by the Rizzuto Family for all I know :P

The crazy thing is that's more money than the city of St. Petersburg is putting into their brand new baseball stadium ($600 million).

"Other unforeseen factors"
I wonder what that could be. Get a lot of competition from Quebec steel companies that undercut the holy eff out of the market to do work outside Quebec. But if anyone from outside the province dares do work inside Quebec...watch out!
This is just so absurd. Maybe if you can repurpose that colossal mistake to be anything but a stadium you could salvage it. But this money so that Taylor Swift or Bruce Springsteen might come there is nuts.

I've got an idea to save them some money. Cut the lines holding the white bits up. Remove white bits from stadium. That's about it, actually.

ok now you are really getting personal...(as a McGill football 'season ticket' holder for 4 years in the late 80s when that thing was actually crumbling like the roman coliseum!

I didn’t know about the history of the cost of the stadium or even see it as an engineering marvel growing up. Like everyone in Toronto I’ve been to Montreal dozens of times and have seen the outside of it, and like a lot of Montreal until more recently it seemed like it was in a run down area (or dated at the least) so even passing by you don’t pay that much attention. Plus inside during the Expos days seemed like a very dated structure internally. That all said, from this thread and looking at the picture it does look damn nice on the outside. The cost is absurd. Why not keep it an open stadium and renovate the internal for that cost? MLB instant ready in that case.

Don't forget that since it's Montreal, most of this money is for the mob
