Will have to wait until after the trade deadline to accurately assess if this year's roster is better on paper than the one that ended last season.
|
Care to expand on either of those? I don't see it. Not that it would take much to upgrade that lineup.

I've definitely never heard an Oiler fan say/admit that they took a step back with the roster going into a season. It's been how many consecutive years they've claimed the team improved in some way?
Remember Staples' 6 lines and 4 pairings deep drivel that one year?
And if they can't convince themselves on the roster players in/out they'll play up a Bakersfield prospect as being able to immediately step in and play the McWing and make them better. And to no one's surprise it never happens.

Yeah...theres a lot of that. I recognized the old Oilers Sutter, but beyond that? That is a 'whos who' list of nobodies.

23/24 Opening Roster

RNH-Draisaitl- Brown
Foegele-McLeod- Janmark
Holloway- Pederson?-Ryan
Nurse-Ceci
Ekholm-Bouchard
Kulak-Broberg

The trade deadline is likely when the Oilers go shopping for a Bjugstad replacement. They will have more cap space at the deadline as they will actually accrue space throughout the season since they are no longer starting the season in LTIR.

You just listed the rosters.
Why or how is it better?
Ekholm is an obvious upgrade but I'm not sure I see what you see.

Ekholm is the best D in bold. Brown is the best forward.
To me that represents an upgrade on the team that started last season.

Ekholm is a going to be collecting an Old Age Security pension pretty soon here.

Well Ekholm is 33 with a career of very heavy physical minutes and Brown only played 4 games last year and had to recover from a pretty major injury. Let’s wait and see how that plays out first.

There's a lot of "bolding" going on. Not sure what you're trying to say exactly.
Feel free to expand. Or don't. Up to you. I just don't see the purpose of your post without some real reasons why they are better.
Again, I don't see it but I'm willing to change my mind.

Being the best in the "bold" doesn't mean you're great.
I'll give you that Ekholm is a difference maker on the back end, especially in how he affects slotting. I think that Brown and Janmark can be an upgrade on Yamamoto and Puljujarvi, but the difference is pretty marginal.
To say that this is a much better team than last year is ludicrously optimistic. Not a terrible team, especially with the star power up front, but still overly reliant on those two. Even a slightly down year in the star power and you're struggling to make the playoffs. That can't feel great.
Oh wait, I know how that feels. That feels exactly like the Flames of last year. Enjoy!

Yamamoto and Brown are pretty close stats wise, with Yamamoto having a higher ceiling and Brown having a significant injury risk.
Murray played 14 games and Malone 10. They may have technically been on the opening day roster (I haven't checked), they really weren't a significant part of the team.
Kostin played 57 games and should be on the 2022-23 list, even if he had the flu or something on opening day.

Brown looks fragile based on how many games he's played in recent years. Not sure he does any more than replace Yamamoto, and that's assuming he can string together anything near a full season, which it appears would require good fortune. The rest of the in/out are lateral changes or downgrades.
Nothing that screams any obvious upgrade, while a number of cases that it could be a small step back.
(I'm looking at opening roster vs playoff roster though, so I don't look at Ekholm as a 23/24 addition. I didn't realize people did opening roster to opening roster comparisons, but that's a convenient way to make the roster look vastly improved on the back end)

Still top heavy, always going to be with two superstars. Brown is a gamble, if it works out that will help out but if not there’s a problem there. In the back Elkholm helps out for sure and might help out with Bouchards development.
Still for them to take the next step it’s largely about the team they have playing a more mature game then they have.

This always cracks me up.
That's only the roster on paper. The real roster for 50% of every game is this:
PP
Kane-Draisaitl-McDavid
RNH-Bouchard
Not PP
Kane/RNH/Hyman-Draisaitl-McDavid
Ekholm/Nurse/Kulak Bouchard/Ceci
Skinner
Campbell
