Default Deletion of Threads

I just noticed the Kipper and Phanuef smoking thread was deleted. I had nothing to do with that but I was wondering what the justification of removing that was or what the big deal was.

It was just two players sitting around in public, relaxing, probably after the game. A lot of athletes smoke, wasn't Mario Lemieux a big smoker? The stigma attached is ridiculous. We all know that Kipper and Phaneuf (and many other Flames) smoke, it's not a big secret and they aren't doing any illegal or explicit.

Why are threads like that removed? It just seems like a big brother/chilling effect thing to me that's not neccessary.
