Sort of, but not really.

Gaudreau led the Dubuque Fighting Saints with 72 points in 60 games as a 17-year-old his one and only season in the USHL, and then he went straight to Boston College. Farrell scored 19 in 28 at the same age while playing for the USNDT. He only started playing in the USHL in his 18-year-old season. Gaudreau was in his third and final season in the NCAA as a 20-year-old—the same age that Farrell is now in his rookie season. Gaudreau scored 80 pts in 40 GP that year, and was the highest scorer in college hockey by a country mile. Farrell is not even the highest scorer on his team through two games.

I found it pretty exciting following both Mangiapane and Dube. Especially because they both kept on raising the bar of expectations before solidifying their spots with the Flames.

I think there's getting excited about prospects (good) vs. getting excited about stats (not as good).

Not that you shouldn't get excited about whatever you want, God knows we could use some more of that, I'm just saying that stats and YouTube clips need to be taken with some salt.

Cautious optimism is always prudent but there's a big difference between a prospect like Howse and one like Coronato.
Howse had one attribute that he was elite in - his hands.

But he was a poor skater, not a good two way player and generally had poor hockey sense. So he exceled in junior at doing the one thing he could do - score goals. But it didn't translate because he was weak in virtually every other area of the game.

In contrast Coronato has great goal scoring ability, high end hockey sense and adequate skating (that can be improved and hopefully does). It's early days but he's got a lot more of the attributes you look for.

Yep mangi was there for me after Johnny. The excitement wasn’t quite as high, but it’s definitely been there.

Of course. One is a first round pick, the other was a 3rd. I wasn't comparing the two prospects, but talking about using stats as a measuring stick. Of course with hindsight Howse was a dud, but what was his NHLe after his overage year?

I had the insight from my brother-in-law who knew/played with his father on the Spruce Kings and the apple did not fall far the tree, so I had low expectations…high hopes but low expectations.

In regards to Howse, the Flames realized that Roman Horak was the one who was actually driving the play for that line. That's why they acquired him from the NY Rangers.
Howse couldn't do anything without Horak.

Howse’s biggest year was 83 points which is good but not fantastic in Jr. That year there were plenty of guys (a lot of whom also didn’t do much) at that level and quite a few higher - probably 10 guys had over 100. And not just the RNH and Stones. Linden Vey had 116. Lethbridge had two guys I have never heard of over 100.

Only the lousy ones. I think I know exactly who you are talking about, but only the lousy ones that were insignificant AHL'ers at best never got a 'fair shot'. Few earned it. Calgary was JUST starting to turn around their drafting and development program. Back then, we all were happy with guys like Armstrong making a push one year.

I would say Calgary probably gave more chances back then to guys who never got another sniff again anywhere else. The one guy that I faintly recall complaining never got a sniff, but he wasn't even good in the AHL, and never went on to play pro at any other level either.
