IMO Hanifin-Tanev was the top pairing to start the year. A pretty successful pairing at that.
|
That's only true if you judge pairing by ice time, quality of competition or results. If you go by narrative, most pundits felt that whatever line had Gio on it was the top pair because historically that has been true.

Yeah they had one good pairing at a time
I view that as a problem
Yeah, yeah, shortening the D and paying early is part of the process
The team sucked so at some point not all of their moves are defensible. I am just looking at the bad ones staring us straight in the face

What should have happened in hindsight was a trade of Gio to Toronto (he would be happy with that, and Toronto would have done it), use Gio’s money to pay Brodie and you could still get Tanev with Hamonic’s money. You could have pried Hyman out of Toronto I bet, and maybe a pick.

You really should consider applying for the job! This is a good suggestion, and is something I think Flames need to pay attention to. Gio is getting older and sometimes that is good time to move the player while you can still get the value. Hindsight is easy, but the job does require a lot of hats.

Well, that particular move is off the table. They have Brodie and don’t need Gio, plus Hyman has worked out well, and Gio is less valuable than he was then.

So many walls of text.
Hockey is stochastic. More so than perhaps any other popular sport.

I think that just further outlines just how disappointing this past decade of high end talent has been when the games start to matter which is crazy considering just how hyped they have been as technology and media around the drafts has evolved over that span.

This is Justin Bourne (not Jason) on the Leafs, but I thought it worth posting in a summer of change for Calgary topic.
It's pretty spot on.

I can’t help but wonder if in future years they revert back to something I’ve always thought: you can’t import character around a team’s core and change the team’s DNA. The character of the core is the character of the core, and having strong confident personalities around the fringes is great, but it’s Marner and Matthews and Nylander going over the boards in the big moments, not Thornton or Foligno or Simmonds.
I don’t think the character of the Leafs’ core is an issue. The point is that bringing in people around it doesn’t alter what your team really is, so get the best players and accept that the team belongs to the players who play the minutes. If you don’t think those players have “it,” well, then you’ve got bigger problems to address.

Every fanbase does it, but the Leafs do it to such a heightened degree, especially with Sportsnet fawning all over them. They keep bringing in these fringe guys with character and then immediately overrating them because "these guys know what it takes."
The Foligno trade was terrible at the time, not in hindsight.
As Mirtle wrote in the Athletic this morning:
Quote:
It was like the Leafs had to just keep jamming more and more and more veterans in every possible roster orifice, trying to prove this team was no longer the old team that couldn’t get things done when it counted.
And most people bought into it, in the organization and on the outside. It’s certainly a strategy that fits with hockey orthodoxy. It was what the establishment always seemed to call for with this roster: get tougher, get more experience — then you’ll be able to win.

It's the core guys that have to adapt their games. Veterans are great, but except in rare cases, they're not going to step up when your stars go cold. They're not capable of it.
So, either your core guys have to get better at winning, or you need to change up your core. Not all of it, certainly. A piece, at least. Change the dynamic, whatever. Those are basically your only options.

Technically, 1981-1996 birth year, so 25 and older right up to 40 (we could lodge the complaint about Gio!). But it’s more fun to say “Millenials!” than “Gen Z!”.

I like Brad Treliving. Seems like a good guy and a hard worker and this isn't knee jerk for me as I started losing faith in him a few years ago as I still can't get over the Hamonic trade. I feel that trade was totally irresponsible as you don't give up assets like that for a 2nd pairing (at the time) defenseman. I've been pretty consistent for a long time in that he doesn't have a grip on what makes a good head coach and he's invested far too many resources into a blueline that has has never really performed to expectations. I think he's a phenomenal Assistant GM but not a great GM. If he stays on another year it's not the end of the world for me as he's not the worst GM in the league. The head coach is now stable for the next two years so he's going to have to make good on his words of change to which I imagine he's working on right now as we speak.

This is gold:
"Just keep jamming more and more and more veterans in every possible roster orifice."

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.
