It was almost the exact spot Johnny sniped from against Montreal. Mid circle, between the dot and the top of the circle. Not “a long way out”. Right in the “home plate” zone.

The problem is people arguing on the extremes. Which is exactly what you are doing.

Yeah I can get if the Flames let him go to UFA and lost him for nothing. That would be a royal blunder.
Good for Sam. And good for the Flames in netting a return from a team who saw the value and potential in Sam.

You mean “good goal” as in “exactly what I posted”?
It was a good shot. The goalie was also rightly upset at himself because it was one that could have been stopped. The two can co-exist.

Agree on the ‘get your stick out of the way’, it’s nice to see the shot come off the stick
But as for easy? No, that’s a good (/lucky) shot placement. Same as when Johnny scored on Montreal
I say good / lucky because the shooter intends to shoot it generally there, but it’s tough to be that accurate. An inch here or there makes a huge difference. And if you don’t believe me, just look at how often the Flames try to pick corners and can’t even hit the damn net
If you’re a goalie, you’ve been beaten on that shot too
Your trapper doesn’t cover all of the space in that top corner, and you can only move your arm so much in the fraction of a second that it takes after the shot leaves the stick.
Shooters sometimes find holes and sometimes hit the goalie. Luck plays a role.
This reminds me of when a Flame shot it on Allen and hit his pad 10 inches off the ice, people were fawning over the pad save, then Markstrom lets one in, over the pad inside the post (the Iggy special), and people are saying ‘he’s gotta have that one’
If you’re a goalie, I’d be surprised if you don’t look at it like this

Huh? How is that?
A simple statement that this doesn’t make the Flames look good is extreme?
Offer anything useful?

Or “much easier”…. Relax and don’t get too tied into one word I used when I clearly linked it to Johnny’s snipe at the top of the page.

Frankly I can't tell either way if it did or not with any certainty.

I can only speak for myself, but I don't consider whether or not it was deflected to be relevant to how well he is playing.
Pretty sure I don't have any confirmation bias on it - there was an angle that looked pretty clearly like there was no tip.
But sure, let's make this a contentious issue too.

We've never seen a trade that initially looked bad for the Flames ultimately turn out great. Not even once, and especially not recently.

Nor do I. I just think it's an interesting thing. People are literally looking at the same piece of video and reaching opposite conclusions largely aligned to their view on the overall topic.
Again I can't tell if it was or not.
And I don't think it really matters against his overall play either.

Here's what matters to me:
8 GP: 5G, 6A = 11 points
+11, 1.38 PPG, 18:27 avg Ice time
That's not even getting into the corsi stuff...

Frankly I was commenting more on how people react to a goal depending on their own bias.
“What a snipe” versus “The goalie has to have that”.

Haha. No, it’s a statement after 5 years
There has been the argument made for years now about the Flames not getting the most out of the player.
The argument has been that there should be more, but he wasn’t given the opportunity, linemates and stability. There is data that has been presented to support that. Ice time data, line mate (% of time with linemates).
The play driving metrics were there, even strength productivity per 60, playoff results. (Shows up in camp and is put on the 4th line… meanwhile guys like Leivo, Simon etc are gifted decent looks)
In the face of that data, people plug their ears and say ‘nuh uh, it’s on the player, he had his opportunities’.
The player himself in Calgary seems to settle in under Sutter, is quoted saying he thought he had more to give, enjoyed playing under Sutter etc.
Christ, the team bungled their highest ever draft pick for 5 years, and just when there was a glimmer of light, where the player has an actual competent NHL coach and is responding, Tre pulls the plug
So many people have a hypothesis that the player may succeed with a defined role, quality linemates, consistent linemates, good coaching
Look, I don’t expect him to keep up the pace of 1.37 points per game. It’s not about maintaining that level.
It’s about whether the Flames come out looking good. He has accomplished in 8 games there what he would in 30-40 here.
The Flames squandered their highest ever pick, mismanage it for 5 years.
Quenneville calls it a home run
And it’s “extreme” for me to say the Flames don’t come out of this looking good? This is a full on #### show
Frankly, I just have to laugh. Extreme. That’s silly

5v5 for the 8 game stretch Bennett has been on Florida...
CF%: 65.22 (2nd on team)
SF%: 63.48 (4th on team)
GF%: 100.00 (1st on team)
xGF%: 73.25 (1st on team)
SCF%: 69.23 (2nd on team)
HDCF%: 74.29 (1st on team)
HDGF%: 100.00 (1st on team)
He isn't even being "lucky". He's freaking dominating when he's on the ice.
