Tokyo 2020 Official Thread
Today would've been the opening ceremonies for Tokyo 2020.
The Olympic opening ceremonies threads are some of the more humorous and snarky ones on this site, so looking forward to it in 364 days, July 23, 2021, as well as of course the high and lows and obscurity that surrounds every Olympics.
Say what you want about the costs and hassles and legacy of hosting them, but when they occur it is a great two weeks of television, as the Olympics has retained the cache as the global event it is, and is appointment viewing, even through a very different world, sporting, media and otherwise, since 30 or 40 years ago.

My face is a bum!

I don't understand why they can't just bump it to 2022 and have a 2 year gap. It's been done before with the winter olympics when they first staggered them.
I was really hoping for this year though, as it would have been entertaining to see people way off recent records due to the lack of competition.

I haven't paid any attention to the Olympic venues in Tokyo but considering that most of the events outside the marathon, golf, rowing and maybe track & field (assuming they didn't build a domed stadium) are indoors they could even do the Olympics next winter if the pandemic climate has improved.

Team USA -- The rich kids who want to close down the youth rec center to build an extension to the parking lot at the country club.
Team Canada -- The plucky kids who will stop them.
On first glance, I thought the Canadian was wearing a Batman t-shirt.

Fashion is 100% subjective more so than lot of things, especially for a one off outfit for at a closing ceremonies, but no problems with the American . It's got a touch of arrogance and superioty to them, but look classy, but that's been the confident branding the last 40+ years of US Olympic teams.
Canada (The Bay) seems to try too hard. Either embrace the "travelling backpacker with a Canadian flag in the back pack" only this time adding the Jean jacket, entirely, or not at all.
This looks like an outfit a 14 year old may wear "well we kinda want to dress up, but not too much, so we will put on a black shirt and white pants I guess to look formal, sort of, but this blue jean jacket will make sure the other countries think we don't look too formal. And that we write on jean jackets with markers, so.."

A "Canadian tuxedo" is a colloquial term for wearing a jean shirt or denim jacket with jeans. The term reportedly originated in 1951 after Bing Crosby was refused entry to a hotel in Vancouver, British Columbia because he was wearing a denim top and denim bottoms.

It would cost billions to delay another year. Like Euro or Copa got to put on something.

Why would it? Couldn’t all losses be recouped and then some with spectators next summer?

Not sure that's be enough. And what if COVID is still a problem in Asia next year? You'd have to hold/rent all facilities for another year. The New Olympic Stadium has been dormant for a year, they'd like to use it for other events. The owners of these facilities want to turn them into something else. Ie, the village into condos.
