2021 NFL off season thread
Leave the playoff thread for just that...the playoffs.
Start with this:
Quote:
Doug Pederson's status as Philadelphia Eagles head coach is not firm, and he could be out if owner Jeffrey Lurie is not confident about Pederson's vision for the team after they meet again soon, sources told ESPN.
Pederson and Lurie are expected to meet again early this week in Florida after discussions this past Tuesday did not go well, according to sources.
Lurie's concerns extend well beyond struggling quarterback Carson Wentz, according to sources, and there are a number of outstanding issues ranging from personnel to coaching staff outlook.

And this
Quote:
Had the Houston Texans stayed the course and followed the recommendation of the search firm Korn Ferry, they likely would have hired Pittsburgh Steelers vice president of football and business administration Omar Khan as their next general manager, league sources told ESPN.
Khan and ESPN Monday Night Football analyst Louis Riddick, who are both minority candidates, were the two finalists before Texans owner Cal McNair changed his mind, ignored the recommendation of the search firm he paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to do weeks of work and hired former New England Patriots director of player personnel Nick Caserio, sources said.

Saw on Sportsnet that Deshaun Watson is trying to get traded to Miami, with Tua among the pieces going the other way. Isn't Houston tired of getting owned by Miami in trades?

Tua + 4th overall? That actually seems pretty fair to me.

Unless the Texans have soured Watson so badly with this last hire that he's not willing to let them have 2 seasons to try and fix the rest of the roster. Tua I don't believe will ever be Watson and going to a bad team with this many holes in it's roster will just make it worse for him.

Gonna be interesting to see where Pederson lands. I would think the Chargers and Texans would both be interested in Pederson.

@AdamSchefter
More on Doug Pederson firing: Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie wanted to take time to evaluate situation and look ahead to the future. He met with Pederson a few times. Lurie wanted to dive into what the vision for the future was and how the Eagles could return to contending. So....

Anyway as I have said before, Cal McNair is a tool and sounds like it was chaplain Easterby who whispered in his ear for this hire. Good to know things aren't changing for the Texans.

I assumed maybe Lurie wants to make it work with Wentz and Pederson wasn't part of that equation. That contract isn't likely tradeable and they may have to see if Wentz can get his game back with a new head coach and offensive direction.

I mean by all accounts Pederson is gone because he got tired of being told what to do. And seeing as Howie drafted Hurts I can't imagine they canned Pederson as some sort of "Let's salvage it with Wentz" move. I can't see a prospective coach being drawn to trying to salvage Wentz, the draw to Philly will be a fresh start with Hurts.

I wonder if Pederson follows orders from above and tanks that last game if he knew he was being fired?

Everything that has come out was that he planned to reward Sudfeld regardless in a meaningless game. Do we know someone else ordered the code red or is this just speculation?

Yeah, seriously. Talk about a black mark on your history without anything to show for it.
I would think that the Wentz thing is a way in for prospective coaches rather than a deterrent. It's an NFL head coaching job in a major market. Candidates are going to want that role, especially given that everyone basically thinks it's going to be a while before they're good again. I would imagine that most peoples' interview pitch is, "here's why if I get hired, I can make Carson back into the guy he was". But maybe I'm nuts.

@ZBerm
Jeffrey Lurie in a statement: "Coach Pederson and I had the opportunity to sit down and discuss what that collective vision would look like moving forward. After taking some time to reflect on these conversations, I believe it is in both of our best interests to part ways."
