Calgarypuck Prospect Ranking 2020 - Round 3
It's time for the 8th annual Calgarypuck Prospect Ranking, but at a different time of year and certainly at a different time.
First a look back at previous years can be done with this handy link: Previous Results
Once again vote how you want. There are those that vote 100% on potential, some that vote 100% on the likelihood to see an NHL rink, others that apply a mix, some using the value in a trade. Completely up to you.
I'll run one a day until we are done, and then FlamesAddiction wants to do a one off list version to compare the results.
We start with 35 names so this should get us pretty close to a Flames camp.
2020 Results
1. Valimaki - 85%
2. Zary - 62%

Went with Pelletier, still won't be convinced unless he dominates this year or shows what he can do at another level.
Mackey is next for me, followed by Wolf.

To me there’s a pretty clear top 3 and Pelletier rounds it out.

I gotta say, this was a surprisingly close call between Mackey and Pelletier. I know he's put up big numbers in the Q, but his small size leaves me with reservations, especially after a significant injury last year. However, his hockey IQ is very good, and his tenacity and work ethic is uniquely great. He's got enough skill to make the NHL, but it might be only as a middle 6 winger.
Mackey is 6'2" and very skilled with high IQ. He puts up a fair amount of points as a defenseman and can join the rush pretty well, sometimes scoring in tight. He has the makings of a potential PP quarterback, and possibly a solid 2nd pair defender. Still has to prove he can play in the pros, but that's the same with all these prospects.
I'm honestly torn. I'm going Mackey, just based on a gut feeling.

I went with Pelletier again. That said, I think that there is a legitimate argument for ranking Pettersen a head of him depending on what you like in a prospect.

Dustin Wolf's numbers are indistinguishable from Carter Hart's numbers.
Hart was a solid NHL goalie in D+3 and a clear cut #1 in D+4.
One year left in the WHL and half a season in the AHL and Wolf will be a NHL goalie and the year after a starter.
Only thing in his way is the Flame's history in goalie development and Markstom's contract.

Was a toss up between Pelletier and Wolf for me.
Mackey is 24. I like him as a NCAA graduate pick up, but in the top 5? Come on people.

Button has Mackey as the 3rd best prospect behind the two first round picks (he doesn't count Valimaki).

Mackey for me. Think he's going to be a huge part of the defense this year.

Gotta go with Pelletier again. I saw enough of him last year here in Moncton to know he's going to be a big impact player. He was always the most noticeable on the ice, even if the points didn't reflect that

That's the rarity though.
Most goaltenders of any make need time to season and generally become starters at 23-25 not 20.
It won't be a mark on the Markstrom contract or the team's goalie development efforts if he takes longer than Carter Hart.
Hart is two to three inches taller and was selected five rounds earlier.

I went with Wolf. Goalies are voodoo and you never know how they turn out but look at what he's done. You couldn't ask for better numbers (WHL and CHL goalie of the year) and he has the highest ceiling of the prospects left in my opinion. I don't see Mackey as having #1 D ceiling, Pelletier as #1 W potential but I do see elite #1 potential in Wolf. His odds of reaching it might be the lowest because Calgary can't develop a goalie to save their franchise but that potential is still more valuable to me in how I rank prospects.

Closest to graduate - Yelesin.
