Microsoft Acquires Zenimax Media (Bethesda Games)
New thread worthy - huge news in the gaming world today as Microsoft is acquiring Zenimax Media, parent company of Bethesda Game studios and publisher.
https://www.windowscentral.com/micro...mpression=true
In essence, huge franchises like Elder Scrolls, Fallout, DOOM, Wolfenstein, and Quake are now Microsoft exclusive properties. This is absolutely enormous.

Wow big news, if this was before Fallout 76, I would say ouch. But post Fallout 76; great news. Zenimax had lost their way recently.

As someone who can't wait for the new elder scrolls - is this good news?

ALL ABOARD!

This is good for XBox fans who are hoping for better exclusives. PlayStation users might be left out of access to their favourite games in the future. At the very least they'll get delayed releases to series they've played in the past.

Wow that's a big purchase. Microsoft now owns Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Wolfenstein, Dishonoured, Quake, etc properties. Hard to say if they will make these franchises console exclusives but if they did it would be a big shot at Sony.

It’s too early to say. It’s great if you have Game Pass because the new Elder Scrolls will no doubt be included, but we’ll have to see if they make any changes at Bethesda. Let hope they do.

They did well with Mojang, so I think they will do a good with this studio.

Probably zero change if you're playing on Xbox/PC. Are you asking if MS is going to force them to make Elder Scrolls? I doubt it. They're probably working on it already in some capacity. It's also important to remember that Microsoft also has an Elder Scrolls-like game already in the works with Obsidian set in the Pillars of Eternity universe. It's crazy to think that MS now has both Obsidian and Bethesda.

I'm trying to remember back a few years, but didn't MS do this with another major studio 10-15 years ago, then just let it wither and die?

There was rumors they were going to buy Warner Bros earlier. I wonder if this is Plan B or they were going for both.

They also looked at buying Bungie very recently but the deal was rumored to be too expensive.

Yeah, they killed Lionhead, Digital Anvil, and Ensemble off the top of my head. They also picked up Rare and forced them to do Kinect games.

Right, Rare was the other one I was thinking. Microsoft isn't exactly great at this.

Sea of thieves is an extremely beautiful and great game to play. So I don't think you can group Rare into that list.
I'm guessing they will just let Bethesda do what they do. Which is what they have done with Obsidian, Ninja theory and the other studios they have acquired more recently.

The Lionhead closure was pre-Spencer joining the SLT as EVP. These days, things are done a bit differently (for the better) and you can see it in the mood of people in the organization.

I was just having this conversation with a friend of mine earlier today. I don't think Microsoft's reputation as a studio killer is warranted.
- Peter Molyneux killed Lionhead all on his own.
- Does anyone actually know what games Digital Anvil has made? The answer is Freelancer and Brute Force.
- FASA - Traditionally the developer of the Mechwarrior franchise. Made Mechassault and Crimson Skies for Xbox.
- Ensemble... look, I love Age of Empires but the RTS genre has been declining for decades. They couldn't adapt.
- Rare - Fair enough.
Looks bad on paper but then I can go through any other company and find equally bad studio closures.
Take Sony for instance:
- Psygnosis (Wipeout)
- Incognito (Twisted Metal)
- Zipper Interactive (Mechwarrior 3 & SOCOM)
- Sold off SOE
Rare is really the only notable exception and it sticks out because of how odd it was to acquire a big name company and then have them toiling on the Kinnect. Typically Microsoft has gone out and picked up struggling studios so this move is an interesting one. Bethesda (Fallout 76 and Rage aside) has been putting out great games and they're not in financial trouble.
I am not sure I like this though. The last thing I want to see is an arms race between companies trying to buy up all of the publishers. Sony does love their walled off gardens.

I kind of hope for a new IP out of this as the industry is getting a little sequel heavy IMO.
