Tigers lost
Mariners lost
Orioles lost twice
Magic number is 7 to eliminate the Mariners and Tigers. 6 for the Orioles.

They're making the playoffs, that's pretty much a given. Even if the stumble down the stretch (and I don't think they will), the teams trailing them aren't goud enough to do anything about it.

If they want to take the next step next year, I think they need another guy to slot in as #2.
Too soon to ask Pearson, Hatch, or Merryweather to take that role. Though they would be good as the #3, 4 and 5.
Anderson to round it out (covering injuries), with Stripling and Roark taking bulk, filler innings.

So just looking at some stuff:
Grichuk in Sept has a 0.486 OPS
Gurriel in Sept has a 1.045 OPS
It was fun watching the Jays stage a rally in the 9th down 7 runs. Line is moving, Bo comes up in the 2 hole and smokes a single up the middle scoring the 3rd and 4th runs of the inning. Now down just 3 runs, the tying run comes up in the 3 hole and there he is....Mr ICE COLD in September Randal Grichuk.
K
Then after him in the 4 hole is the teams best or 2nd best hitter so far this year Mr. Teoscar Hernandez, problem is he hasn't played in almost two weeks.
K
Rally ####ing over.
Meanwhile RED HOT Lourdes Gurriel Jr. with his 1.045 OPS in September hasn't even stepped out of the goddamn dug out yet because he's batting 7th. SEVENTH!!!
Why is a guy with a 0.907 OPS on the seaosn, and a 1.045 OPS in September batting SEVENTH?!
Can anyone answer that?

Nope. Because Montoyo is a moron and is trying to “outthink” the game. I’m all for giving new managers a shot, but Montoyo is proving that he doesn’t have what it takes. And that’s fine for now but after the season I hope Shatkins looks hard at what options are available.

Do they play the patient game, stick with they have and hope some young(ish) guys step up like Pearson, Merryweather and Hatch?
Do they sling some money around and go after another big name starter or two in free agency like Bauer for example?
Or do they unload some prospect capital and try to add a front end of the rotation guy via trade?
I would imagine at this point they really regret the Roark signing. I imagine if they'd know Ryu was going to sign they may not have bothered. And if they knew Ryu would sign AND this season would be reduced to 60 games I bet they for sure wouldn't have bothered. Ah well. Hopefully enough happens where all they can do with Roark next season is use him as a low leverage long man out of the pen.
Chase Anderson has a team option too, hopefully they have done enough where they don't feel the need to exercise it.
1. Ryu
2. Stripling
3. Pearson
4. Merryweather
5. Hatch
6. Roark
7. Anderson (team option)
|
Trevor Bauer likes to sign 1 year deals, so he will be the big fish in free agency, it would be nice to get him.
The other guy I would take a big run at is Big Maple. Paxton would slide into the rotation perfectly. The problem is, can he stay healthy.
Ryu and Pearson are locks. I think Merryweather and Hatch deserve a chance to crack the rotation.

Finally get a guy on base and the very next pitch is a ground ball right at the short stop for a double play.
####ing Grichuk. It's either all or nothing with that guy. So frustrating.

The Jays had a gift playoff spot, and they are very possibly letting it slip away before our eyes.
4 more games against the Yankees coming up too.
What a time to play historically bad baseball.

Just tuned in. Yikes.
Glad I have a full beer fridge for the 2nd game. They can't keep losing, need to stop the bleeding.

The losing isn't what has me worried, it's how many runs they are giving up. They have given up 7+ runs in 9 of their last 12. They haven't had a starter pitch in the 7th inning this year. I knew pitching was going to be a weakness, but this is really bad.

This next game is actually pretty huge. They need to stop bleeding runs, losing 5 in a row would be pretty terrible. They some of their starters to step up and get the job done. Stripling absolutely needs to pitch well, and deep.
