1) No - it's playoffs
2) No - If you take away delay of game with putting the puck over the glass, then you are going to have teams clearing it into the stands rather than icing the puck.

How else would you decide a playoff game?
Puck over glass needs to be penalized, however they could shorten the penalty to 1 minute and achieve the same effect.

I think they should treat puck over glass like an icing, no line changes.
I think the idea of the current rule is good, just would suck to see a cup game decided on it.

The discussion that endures after every extended NHL overtime game is so predictable and stupid IMO.
Don’t like to watch them? Simple. Turn the tv off. Stop watching the game. Check the box score the next day.
Those of us who do like to watch them? Well we’ll happily watch them to completion.
And now that I reread that last sentence... That’ll be the same case for those who absolutely love them.

No and no.
If they called more penalties normally in overtime than an over the glass penalty 4 hours later wouldn't stand out so much.

If you treat it as icing, it would still motivate a tired defensive group to throw the puck aimlessly over the glass and get 20-30 seconds to breathe until the next faceoff.
Having an automatic minor keeps the game flowing

Puck over the glass should be like icing - a face-off in your end and you can't change or call a time-out. You can also give the ref the option to call a delay of game penalty if it is egregious (like it used to be).
Overtime is perfect the way it is.

Any solution to playoff OT that isn't the existing solution is a downgrade by default.

What if it was the Flames who went through a 5OT game and, as a result, were too gassed/depleted to make a deep playoff run? Would you feel differently about it then?

But what is even the purpose for changing the over-the-glass rule? Because it happens? Don't almost all penalties happen?
Tripping is a penalty, but most trips are accidental. Should we remove tripping too?
|
Tripping can't be removed because teams could use trips blatantly to gain an obvious & huge unfair advantage. It's not entirely clear if teams could use putting the puck over the glass to gain an unfair advantage. Maybe the rule should be that your first puck-over-glass gets your team a warning, and if you do it again in the game it's a 1 minute penalty, then a 2 minute penalty each time after that in the same game.

Yep, and the game is all about bounces and luck. Right?

It's much harder to send it to the opposing end and keep the puck in the rink than to be free in having a 360 degrees of options on how to delay the game
They changed the rule to this for us, the viewers, so it makes the game flow without constant annoying stoppage while allowing the defending team an option to relieve the offensive pressure

If the Flames or any other team can't score a goal through nearly five whole overtime periods, they have themselves to blame, not the system.

First of all, BOTH teams play the game so both teams are equally tired.
And second, these guys are professional athletes in their 20s or early 30s, they aren't going to be detrimentally affected by an overtime game for weeks, or even days. They're going to be 100% in 2 days. They also have TEAMS of therapists and nutritionists supporting them.
